A 38 year old, 11-6 Argentinian who has beaten nobody and lost to novices? Pretty underwhelming opponent for Huni.

 

A lot of people won't like Huni's opponent but I think it was obvious following on from the Kevin Lerena fight that he needed to get some more wins (& hopefully kayos) under his belt against lower-level opposition before stepping up again. It may be by necessity (they can't afford to bring in higher quality opponents) but I think getting some additional wins & learning how to kayo people should be the short-term priority for him.

It might be a bit frustrating to see the young British heavy Moses Itauma (who has had the same number of pro fights as Huni) get a fight with Demsey McKean when Huni has been unable to secure one, but it would seem the pay is much better fighting over there than it is here.

It does raise a broader question of how committed Fast Eddie Hearn is to developing Huni as a heavyweight if the young British fighter can get a fight with McKean but Huni can't.

 

I'm no Hearn fan but he might want Huni to create a highlight reel he can use for promotional purposes. This opponent is made for it. He has already been stopped 5 times.

 

Huni's fight is an 8 rounder to keep busy. The plan is he is back out again on January 8, 2025. The idea with Huni is to dial back on some of the opposition but to build momentum again and let him develop to his potential.

Right now, the Heavyweight division is a log jam at the very top. Huni is at least a year away from challenging for the title. He's WBO #5 and IBF# 15. That year will be spent keeping as active as possible, fingers crossed.

 

Not that against Huni taking a keep busy fight. Think he's still developing and has been fast tracked compared to other young HWs. No rush for the young fighter, it's already tough weight class

Still ... opponent is underwhelming. Could have at least lured a former name out here .

Some good action this morning from 8:00am AEDT at the World Boxing Under 19 world championships. We've got four young blokes in the semi-finals who have performed particularly well this week (@ 60, 65, 70 & 75 kgs). Really impressed with what I've seen from all of them. It looks like a real good talent pool for the future. We'll get at least one through to the final today & hopefully more.

They are using two rings so make sure you're tuned in to the right one. Our Lightweight, Jacob Cassar, is first up in bout 4 of ring B (at about 8:45am AEDT).

 

Have been impressed with emerging heavyweight Stevan Ivic, who recently won the Aussie heavyweight title.

He's got a long probing jab, quick hands and is improving every fight. He might be 34 but in heavyweight terms that's not that old and he hasn't been damaged yet because he's only had 7 pro fights.

I don't see him winning a world title but he might make a bit of noise before he is done.

 

Cooper "Sawn Off" O'Connell sounds promising. Well done young lad.

 

Son of Shannon but also of Corey McConnell. Pretty good boxing genes.

That's how I see it. He doesn't learn a lot from it but it makes him look more marketable.
