Tough one to call, WAR. Tapia only fought once this year which isn't likely to have moved his career forwards. It may be enough for him to hold where he was though. Beaudesert Storm has moved his career forwards massively this year by participating in the WBC tournament - he fought six times including five times overseas. You can't buy experience like that. I see he & Callum Peters as being the future of that division in this country. Whether they're the present & capable of knocking off the likes of Tapia & Micky Z is hard to tell. I reckon they could but that's about as far as I'd go. We might need to bring in some of The Stifler's Mum thread's other experts in order to call it.

Briggs will be ranked in the WBC top 10 next update and is assured a shot at its silver title in the coming year.

..the Rahim kid any good? I'm probably going to wake up relatively early (like 5-6am my time) for the main event, but is the undercard stuff worth getting up even sooner for?

It's a good undercard, imo. The two heavyweight fights are well matched. Stevan Ivic v Liam Talivaa for the Australian title & Demsey McKean v Toese Vousiutu are good fights. Both have clear favourites but live underdog opponents. Anyone who watches will get an understanding of the Australian boxing heavyweight landscape. Those are niche fights in a niche subset of the sport (Australian boxing).

Fred Zziwa is contesting the Commonwealth games trials at Welterweight in the amateurs in February. Should be some interesting fights in that division to decide selections. Our best lightweight, Jacob Cassar, is moving up to Welter which is presumably where he sees himself campaigning through until the Olympics. The national Welter champ, Gene Keremete, will also be competing. Three into one doesn't go so it will be interesting to see who makes it through.

There was also going to be a three into one situation at Light Heavy but the lads are obviously better at maths than I am b/c they have dispersed themselves into different weight divisions. Marlon Sevehon will contest Light Heavy, Lachlan Lawson has moved up to Heavyweight while Callum Peters is scheduled to contest Junior Middle. If they all get through, that will mean we take three of our best guys instead of only one. Good work from whoever arranged that although it remains to be seen how effectively Callum Peters can boil down to Junior Middle.

Things aren't quite as well sorted in the lower weight divisions. Two of our very best amateurs in Jye Dixon & Riek Chuol will be contending for the Bantamweight spot. With Jacob Cassar moving up from Lightweight they could have moved Riek Chuol up into that division which potentially would have allowed us to take both he & Jye Dixon. Unfortunately, it would seem someone forgot to give the African kid the same memo the boys in the higher weight divisions received meaning he could miss out on making the Commonwealth games team when (imo) he should be going.

Not really. He is very raw and tries mimicking his old mans style. He is quick and can be explosive. He has no amateur background he was playing Rugby League and couldn’t make first grade so he turned to boxing. He works hard and could learn on the job they will have to bring him along slowly. I think he needs to focus on the basics get his footwork right. Time will tell he might surprise us.

Some interesting developments regarding the women's selection tournament for the Commonwealth games. Flyweight looks to be wide open if someone can put together an unbeaten run during the tournament which commences on 20 Jan. At Bantamweight, selection looks to be a two-horse race between our 2024 Olympic flyweight rep Monique Suraci & our 2025 World Championships Featherweight rep Julie Ramadan. Not sure why Ramadan has come down in weight when she would have been a strong favourite to make the team fighting at Featherweight. Featherweight now looks wide open while youngster Ciara Storch should qualify at Lightweight. I think she's a future Olympic medal winner so hoping she makes it through. Some controversy at Welterweight with 2024 Olympian & 2025 World Champs rep Marissa Williamson electing not to contest the selection trials. She dropped a 3-2 split decision at the national championships at the end of last year & had her funding pulled. I saw that fight & it could have gone either way. The way to respond to that was to turn up to the selection trials & take care of business but she's elected not to compete. Lekeisha Pergoliti should qualify at Junior Middle while Emma Sue Greentree will be selected at Middleweight.

Aust Boxing needs more of these fights. Promising Ryder Pate 2-0 vs hardy gatekeeper Sette. None of that No Limit fighters fighting tomato cans padding their records.
