http://www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/boxing-served-knockout-blow-by-ama-20110330-1cfep.html i,m not an australian but what does the above ruling mean for boxing down under. also on that not could australians please tell what is the current situation with boxing is Oz. is the sport in a healthy position ? which is more popular - boxing or MMA ? cheers
here is a quote from a reader who i think sums it up nicely What fairly land does this idiot live in? Are you going to ban smoking too? Because last time I checked no one gets forced into a boxing ring, but I have to put up with second hand smoke from cigarette smokers every day. You stupid, stupid man. More people die per year rock fishing than have ever died in one year due to boxing. Boxing as a sport or profession is a choice participants make. Werris | Sydney - March 30, 2011, 9:29AM Personally I dont think it will have much affect on aussie boxing, its in pretty dire straights at the moment, but not due to any commissions. I also dont think that the AMA withdrawing support in WA will even stop bouts from happening in WA. Boxing over here is not going to good, due to lack of big names and hardly any televised events, most of the promoters are trainers who lose money to promote fights (or so they say) just so their fighters can get fights. I think MMA generates more interest when the UFC comes to town but that is about it. Its not very big here either compared to local aussie sports like union, league, cricket and afl
MMA is still a bit of a novelty and gets a little bit of bad publicity, however, UFC last 12 months with their two shows have really given it a focus. Boxing is probably at it's lowest ebb in Australia........ The Mundine and Green circus hasn't helped. Our 2 best boxers Katsidis and Geale are not even known to the general public which is a problem.
boxing is alright in this country, WA, is nothing in the sport, all the fights and top trainers are in the easten states, MMA is a joke in Australia at best, the fighters are very poor.
