Bingo! these guys hang around forever now due to a lack of depth in the heavyweight division. You didn't see 40 something year old heavyweights fighting in the 70's and 80's for titles. They'd have been killed, the fighters with the oldest resumes are in the last 25 years, a distinct point of proof. As for the argument that fighters are better today at 35 than they were 40 years ago, well that depends on who they're fighting doesn't it.

My ranking of Marciano has dropped after reading this thread.

I always thought his opposition was more experienced than that.

Interesting. Louis has 27.5 and Wilder has 35 average years. It's a significant difference.
But best resume ? Louis ? I doubt it.

That makes no sense. Nothing in my post had anything to do with the quality of competition of any other the champs listed?

Thus my confusion and reply of "What?".

Yes you've done a breakdown of average age. I'm surprised by how low it was for Rocky. I always thought his competition was more experienced than that which is why I'm now moving him down my rankings.

That's a pretty dumb reason to move somebody down. The average age of his best opponents is 30 years old. Guys back then turned pro at 18-19. They had more than enough experience.

    No list is dumb imo.

If you rank him top 10 at HW and I choose to not rank him at all at HW shows to say who's right?

I'm not saying the list I'm just saying the reason. Do whatever you want of course it's just a pretty bad reason imo.

If you think that 30 years old is inexperienced that is all on you.

There's no methodology here. You're openly admitting that you're picking through guys' record and deciding who to count and who not to count

There's a term people who deal with date use: GIGO. It means garbage in/garbage out. You put in data that is not consistent (there's no numerical markers here, you get to decide who is and isn't a "big name" and which fights to include, so it's garb, chosen at your whim) and you get garbage out.

Which is what this whole thread is.
