Mike, Those in the boxing community know who John Garfield is ( Garfield is his poster name ) respect his writing ability and integrity. How many people do you know who saw Louis, Marciano, and Liston work out, worked with Dundee, and have also been up close to see Klitschko work out? Posters like Garfield are very rare. Most guys in their 70's don't know how to turn on a comptuer, let alone find a messgae board and post on it. When it comes to older historians like Hank Kaplan and John Garfield who have been around boxing for 40+ years, I respect their opinions even if I disagree with them. There is a finite amount of film and print out there. Older historians can fill in the gaps from the 1930 to present. Speaking of this age poll, there is no way I knew more about boxing as a 20 year old than as a 30 year old. Your knowledge as a historian grows as you age....and stays with you as long as you keep your marbles.
Thanks for the props, M. I feel like I took a dirt nap and read a eulogy. If they're as good as yours, when I go, I'm gonna ask'em to leave my head out; I don't wanna miss any of them.
Have a bit of respect mate, we don't "have" to do anything. We're blessed to have a guy like John, who barely posts and sure doesn't try to impose his opinions on us anyway.
I`ll second that... John is a very knowledgable guy and he has been around this sport for longer than many of us here who weren`t even born when he just started following the sport. Like JohnThomas said, John Garfield never forces his opinions on anyone, he just likes to share his stories and memories with us, and I for one always look forward to reading what he has to say.
I should make today Thanksgiving after reading this, RB. Now if I can only impress my wife with what I say.
...good one John, I know how you feel too. My wife`s the same when it comes to my boxing knowledge, don`t impress her one bit.
Have to hide this, j. My wife and daughter have been kickin' me about it for years. I'm runnin' out of excuses.
