Last Saturday super middleweight contender Avni Yıldırım of Turkey fought former champ Anthony Dirrell of USA for the vacant WBC 168 title. The fight was stopped midway through the 10th round due to accidental headbutt and the title was awarded to Dirrell by Technical Split Decision (96-94, 96-94, 92-98) The reason why Avni is appealing is that 10th round was stopped with over 1 minute remaining. https://imgur.com/a/Kf6zDXE The judges, however, scored that (incomplete) round and awarded it to Dirrell. See official scores here: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D0WVGDUXQAE-Hfx.jpg If 10th round was completed and awarded to Avni Yıldırım, (the momentum was on his side at the time of the stoppage), then the result would be a draw. What do you make of this? Do you think the result can be overruled, or an immediate rematch ordered?
I didn't even think about that at the time, thats despicable!! An immediate rematch should be ordered, but I actually don't want to see it. Dirrell should fight Eubank Jr next
Yildirim should be happy about the scorecards, he was clearly losing the fight. Losing a SD sounds much better than losing 6 or 7 of 9 rounds.
As he should.. for those that don’t know that fight had open scoring so going into the 10 Dirrell was down 3 rounds on 1 card up 2 rounds on the other.. and was 5-4 on the last card.. So knowing that the dr was gonna stop the fight he played it safe in the 10 by moving around and throwing light jabs here and there and when Yildrim finally cornered him he allowed Yildrim to get a punch to open the cut virtually ending the fight in the middle of the 10th while also guaranteeing he won the 10th to get victory.. This guy and his brother need to retire because it’s always something weird in their fights and they always seem to try to get a dq victory instead of a legitimate win
That has nothing to do with the question at hand. The guys character or ability was not the point of the question if I am not mistaken. Digging through the rulebook to make sure the right action was taken by the judges is what we are looking at, and I for one am interested.
I'm sorry, what are you talking about? Mark Nelson ruled the cut as being from a headbutt long before the fight was stopped, no? Regardless of whether or not anyone happens to agree with that call, that makes it a very cut and dry scenario - go to scorecards for a TD. I fail to see where there's any controversy here.
