In the USA, you can get 20 years and your house sold for having a few plants, if you live in the wrong State.

 

Excellent points. He appears to have actually done very very little. Certainly nothing that would warrant a 20 year jail term. Not in a "proper" country anyway....

In any case, if as a foreigner he is indeed, as claimed, a hardened criminal... why should the burden of feeding and housing him for 20 yrs fall on the beleaguered us taxpayer? Surely deport him back home, no?

Because jails in the USA have been privatized, so they want the income. Same reason sentences are much longer than before, on average, and less paroles are given, and prisons are massively overcrowded...

I'm not sure to what extent those 20 years are justified, but I am almost absolutely sure he deserves at least several years in prison—which effectively ends his boxing career.
