Awful performance by Rhodes

The bookies got it right. It was always going to be a big ask for Rhodes, esp. after the level he has been fighting at for the last few years and he just wasn't up to it.

 

Didn't help that he'd only fought a cab driver from Rio in the past 18 months. Couldn't afford that at his age. He'd have had a lot more confidence if he was still riding the wave of that Moore victory. He'd have still got smashed no doubt, but it didn't help the performance.

 

How people gave Rhodes a hope last night i never know ... this kid is very good his hand speed is exceptionel and even i woke up this morning feeling the pain of the bodyshots.... watching the re-run now and just cant see what else Rhodes could have done .... fair play to Rhodes for going into Sauls back yard but even Rhodes admitted this lad was something special ...

 

Thing is the Moore win was a Euro level fight. IF (and this was the only question last night IMHO) Alvarez is real world class then he was always likely to beat Rhodes.

 

I have to admit that I completely underestimated Alvarez prior to this fight. The lad is already a prodigious talent and he's got a lot of time to improve. On reflection I also owe Matt Hatton a good measure of respect for going the distance.

 

Well yeah Gaz, I said that before the fight. Moore actually had Rhodes on the brink quite a few times so I was never sure how people were seeing a RR victory. It was unlikely at best.

My problem was just the fact they spent 18 months doing absolutely nothing. Thats a lot of time for those doubts to creep in even if his skills did not erode.

 

Pretty poor. I thought Rhodes was intimidated from the outset. All that touching gloves pisha fetr the first few rounds shows too much respect

 

I guess they didn't want to lose the title shot. Rhodes could have lost to a top 10 fighter and the title shot goes forever, I think they just decided to sit tight and wait.

It got him the shot but didn't do his chances any good.

 

Hands up from me too! Im down £50 on a Rhodes ko, even backed the draw with paddy power 55-1 with a £1 just incase he got robbed

I based my opinion on Alvarez following his dismal display against Jose Cotto and then his fight against Matt Hatton, he failed to sparkle in both and didn't look to have nay pop about him, i thought he was a GBP hype job but to be fair the lad he looks very decent at the weight and a fight with JCC jr looks to be a massive event down the line.

My questions is this, what on earth was Rhodes doing going out to mexico that late on? and what was he thinking looking for the ko without any prep work, he reminded me of Mosley against Mayweather (minus hurting Canelo) where be simply looked to load up and not do anything else of matter. Such a shame really cos his career could have had a swansong should he have beaten Canelo, the Rhodes that beat Moore would beat JCC jr imho...

Yep, thats my thought process, much the same as Herbie Hide to an extent. Get the WBC mandatory challenger and sit and wait, fighting anyone of note and possibly losing that chance is obviously high risk low reward hence his low activity as late...

 

Alvarez was too good, simple as that. Bigger, faster, stronger, fresher and a better boxer.

Looks quite a prodigious talent to be fair.

 

I read the fight right with Rhodes unable to make any really impression on Alvarez but the odds were just too prohibitive to have a bet.

 

I refuse to watch sky now on unless its a complete necessity, Watt seems to be watching a different fight most of the time and mystic megs the judges opinions throughout the fight. Nelson is just strange, he seems so wrong on many times its bordering ridiculous now that sky persist in ruining coverage with his inclusion.

 

Rhodes needed this fight three years ago. Unfortunetly his time was far passed and he met a top level oppoenent.
