Awful performance by Rhodes

I thin RR has always been a bit overated to be fair. the moore fight is alkways used as an example but as others mentioned he was losing that imo and in trouble a fair few times. moore at that point was on the slide too after too many wars. not really surprised by how this unfolded

 

Canola has came on since he fought Hatton. I can see him moving up another weight division soon, he looks massive at the weight.

When Rhodes was pushing Canola onto the back foot he looked at his best (and Coldwell even implored him to do it more), but when Canola was turning the agressor I thought Rhodes should have moved to the side more, as he was just going back in straight lines.

His work rate needed to be higher if he was going to seriously have a go at winning rounds, especially by taking the initiative in the earlier rounds when Canola was fighting in bursts, saving his best for the last minute of the round.

As I have said, altitude must have been a big factor (it affected Buckland too - as he tired rapidly in the last couple of rounds of his fight). I have ran a marathon at high altitude with no altitude training and I was shocked how quickly I have sucking for air in the first couple of miles, I can only imagine how much more it takes out of you in top level boxing match.

No doubt Canola is faster, stronger and a class above Rhodes and I fancied him to win anyhow.

 

Did anyone else notice the first big punch that Alvarez threw which hit Rhodes on his gloves? It almost knocked him backwards into the ropes! Alvarez speed/power must have suprised him.

As a few have already said, it must be difficult to start letting your own shots go after you've felt the huge power of the guy in front of you. Rhodes was out of his depth.

 

I couldn't believe the size of Alverez, so stocky for a light middle, he could very easily move up the weights as he is 20 and still growing.

Also he didn't really put his weight behind his punches, those were arm punches snapping Rhodes' head back.

Love him to have a unification fight with Cotto in the future.

 

I think he was surprised by Alvarez's power early on which made him cautious abouot pulling the trigger. Also I think he disguised being hurt more than a few times.

I seriously think he could have won if he'd let his hands go when Canelo was on the ropes but he was more satisfied to throw a few measuring jabs and a big right hand which nearly always missed. He should have loaded up with straight rights and left hooks. He also should have invested in the body in the first half of the fight but I don't remember him actually throwing a body shot all night.

Switching to southpaw did him no favours, Alvarez looked more comfortable when faced with the southpaw stance.

This was Canelo's best performance by far. I now believe he can beat almost everyone at LMW. There are some potentially great fights to be had in the near future.

I also think Rhodes can still be competitive with the top fighters in the division

Tbh i think Ryan was cautious from get go. Always looking to half step back even when he flung jab. It seems that was the plan to walk him onto shot but Ryan has lost his sharpness and i think he struggled with speed of Alvarez as well as not having a plan b. The plan was very naive to expect to land that one shot that would change game. I think as much as i agree they probably wasn't gonna win fight on points they should of still boxed each round to win that round and set things up.

In a way it makes me even more sad that he took Jamie Moore's chance...if Jamie was still fit to fight etc he'd of made last night into a war. Ryan let his chance slip sadly but remember it's his life and his fight...not ours.

 

No disgrace losing to someone who, it is now clear, is a real talent.
30+ fights in 5 years and only 20 years old! The kid is a monster at the weight...remember it was Rhodes who was supposed to be the bigger man....nowhere near!
Rhodes was never anything better than Euro level and took a chance nobody would have turned down. Just a job too big.

I think were hearing about how Rhodws never got going, never looked like he tried to match Alvarez at any time.

Not even matching him in any area, let alone beating him can look a lot like your not trying to win.

 

ALvarez is just leagues ahead of Rhodes simple as that.
