Seems like the poor guy got more than a few bad breaks, skimming over his career. How did he manage a SD loss against a prime Moorer and very, very close and debatable loss against Foreman only to be slaughtered so completely by Wladimir? What did he have going for him besides guts?
Schultz was a pretty tough guy with a good chin. I thought he easily won his fight with Foreman, but Schultz got screwed big time by the judges. Fighting Klitschko was just a huge step up in competition. Schultz took Foreman's and Moorer's best punches, but he couldn't do the same against Klitschko.
I would say that the Moorer SD loss was very dubious, I had Moorer winning it 8-4 with only his middle rounds laziness letting Schulz back into it. He did get ripped off against old George though. Schulz had a good chin, decent skills, decent movement and all that. Just didn't really excel in one area.
Schultz was nothing special. Axel got a huge break by getting a draw with Aikenwande. No way Axel deserved that draw. Aikenwande won it clearly. Schultz was popular with the other fighters because he wasnt a dangerous heavyweight. Schultz had a solid chin, some skills, and a lunch pail type of work ethic. He gave the fans their monies worth and became a favorite dance partner of the Foremans, and Morrers of the world. Schultz title match with Botha was one of the worst heavyweight title matches youll ever see. Not quite as bad as Byrd vs Williamson, but a bad fight for sure. The event was further tarnished when the winner ( Botha ) was stripped of the title due to a filed drug test. Schultz was badly beaten by a young Wladimir Kltischko, and attempted an ill fated comeback many years later vs Minto. If he wasnt a heavyweight, Shultz would hardly be remembered at all.
Please he benefitted from one of the most disgraceful decisions in boxing history (AkinwandeI)... He was a solid fighter a bit to plodding to be good, but he made the most of what he had and made a penny or two on the way. I would not read too much into the split defeat to Moorer in Germany. Moorer won easily enough from what I remember, although it was far from the greatest moment in Michael's career.
