I remember reading about this years ago. After the Moore massacre I believe there was talk of this materializing.. am I right? If so, what a matchup. Any thoughts? I believe Duran's ego would never let AYala get the best of him. But what a fight

Duran would stop Ayala. Ayala had talent, but clearly was a head case. He was bound to fold when the going got tough. And the going would get very tough against Duran. Duran was just on another level.

They looked like fighting before Duran fought Moore from memory. Duran would have taken him to school.

Pretty much share the same opinion. Might set a new low with illegal tactics. Not sure any referee would want this one

i dont see how duran is going to whip a young Tony Ayala if he couldnt beat Laing. i admire Duran for having the guts to take the fight but from what i remember, Tony was favored 5-2 to win it

stronger, younger, harder hitting. and probably more ferocious

Duran by late stoppage or decision.

Ayala had bundles of energy and fire, as well as good power. But, he was too wild. Duran would slowly pick him apart.

I would prefer to look at the Moore fight. Duran was more motivated than against Laing and was facing an opponent who came to him and lacked defense. Ayala was more similar to Moore than to Laing.

Moore pretty much encapsulated the highlighted part, except Ayala was more ferocious.

A motivated Duran picks apart the wild, ferocious Ayala.

At that time Duran appeared to have lost all his skills, while Ayala eating people alive. Most people, at that time, thought Ayala would clobber Duran. The Moore fight changed all that.

Duran would have taken Ayala apart. Probably would have ruined him, giving him such a beating.

He was hyped but he never really beat anyone any good.

He got his WBA ranking by beating Argentina's Carlos Herrera, whose main claim to fame was beating a washed up Wilfred Benitez many years later.

Yes, the fight was talked about in late '82, early '83. But, then Ayala got arrested.

Duran was coming off the Laing debacle and Ayala was favored.

But, seeing how Duran regrouped against Cuevas and Moore, I have to favor him over Ayala.

don't listen to Saad. he only appears to be knowledgeable but hit him with something unexpected he cant explain, he'll have to start making up excuses to cover for his mistakes

Tony was part of Lou Duva's stable called Tommorow's champions

if Tony sucked so much he wouldnt be dubbed 5-2 fave over Duran

but then arrested for **** and sent to prison deservedly so

does that mean he couldnt fight? the posters here at ESB SEVERELY underrate him

    fought no one?

true but since when has that ever stopped anyone?

Whom did Leon Spinks fight when he upset Ali?

whom did Foreman beat when he upset Frazier?

i have brought up this point before and all these dumb dweebs at ESB ever do is clam up and play dumb, then repeat the same stale line "whom did so and so ever beat?"

it's easy to say things like "Tony's too wild - Duran would pick him apart" like it's so easy to do in real life

my pick is Tony's youth gives him the edge in stamina and let's face it, Duran didnt do much in his loss to Benitez that year, and was no ball of fire in losing to laing

as Kirk's trainer told him " you're making him him look stupider than SRL"

As a young man, Tony Ayala was a poised, skilled fighter with plenty of talent. As a result, he would have been a handful for Roberto Duran at 154 pounds. Duran may have been a formidable fighter for a number of years starting in 1980, but I believe that his best days were as a lightweight.

People do so much fantasising about 'what if' guys like Ayala and Edwin Valero it's embarrassing. Doug Fischer even said Valero would have gone on to beat a peak Manny Pacquiao if the fight had ever been made. People are entranced by the Ayala story of drug addiction, sparring myths and the fact he was convicted of a crime worthy of Ted Bundy.

There is no reasonable line of thought that would make Ayala favourite over the Roberto Duran who mauled Davey Moore. Naming an opponent Ayala actually beat is a side issue for some when there's some cult myth to be perpetuated. Ayala was made for an all-time great counter puncher with a granite chin like Duran. Bottom line, a drug addicted, sexual deviant, straight ahead brawler like Ayala doesn't beat Roberto Duran anytime before the 1990's.
