Ayala vs. Mario Maldonado. Imagine if that was Mugabi hitting him early in the 1st.

I fancy the Beast ( the version who fought Hagler that is ) in this one despite his deficiencies in certain areas.

Ayala was pretty slow in the foot speed area as well as being shorter than Mugabi and he have a big reach disadvantage vs the Ugandan.

Ayala jr was more responsible defensively than Mugabi but I don’t reckon he ever got himself in the kind of absolute top condition a fighter should be in at the top level.

Mugabi by stoppage around round six.

To be fair Ayala had been boxing in the pro ranks for less than a year. It was his 9th pro fight. Worth noting but maybe not the be all and end all on this one.

True, but he signed for the Duran fight that never happened only about a year and a half later and the Davey Moore fight that never happened not long after that. I'm not seeing a guy who'd have been any match for someone as experienced as Duran or as hard a puncher as Mugabi in just 18 months or so.

They were certainly travelling at a different pace. Mugabi turned pro just 6 months after Ayala and fought Hagler over 5 years later with 25 fights under his belt. Ayala prior to jail had 22 bouts under his belt in 18 months.

Mind you Moore had just 10 fights under his belt at this point but he'd been matched hard and early and responded. Many thought Ayala would roll him but i'm not so sure. Davey had a lot of amateur pedigree and had won some tough battles against decent guys already in that 10.

I'd favor Moore. Duran would have flogged Ayala. Mugabi, maybe. I think it would depend on who got in first frankly.

well the thing I didn't like about Tony was that style against the 154 competition and the up and comers. Not with that defense

McCallum is all wrong for him. Hearns slaughters him. Jackson might be his best shot and I think he's blown out there too. So not just the Duran and Moore's on the scene.

And the thought of Ayala taking a payday and move up on weight against a prime Hagler is the worst scenario.

A most awesome slugfest. Ayala grinds the Beast down mid to late rounds. I give Tony the edge when it comes to unrelenting brutality.
