Ayub Kalule vs Emiliano Villa

After the Roberto Duran fight in July 1976,

Emiliano Villa moved up to a more comfortable weight for his 5' 10" lanky frame.
He would campaign at 147 lbs. (Welterweight).

Took on Carlos Obregon in November 1976, for the Columbian Welterweight Title,
and won a solid 12-round Decision over the #10 WBA-ranked Welterweight.

Carlos Obregon was one-tough fighter, as he had posted a 28-1-0 (17 KO's) record, which
included a (1975) KO 6 over future WBA Light-Middleweight Champion Eddie Gazo.
His only loss, a 10-Round Close-Decision (1975) to future World Welterweight Champion, Pipino Cuevas.

In March 1977, Emiliano defended his Columbian Welterweight Title by defeating
another nemesis, Adalberto Vanegas 27-6-1 (9 KO's), by a 'solid and convincing' 12-Round Decision. Emiliano had fought,
and defeated Vanegas in 'three' previous bouts.

Those 'two-wins' earned Emiliano a #8 WBA-ranking at Welterweight.

 

In May 1977,

Emiliano Villa gets an offer to fight #7 WBA Welterweight, Vianor Durango the
Panamanian Welterweight Champion.

Durango, a hard-puncher with a record of 27-2-0 (22 KO's) is also a sparring partner
for Roberto Duran. The bout is billed as a WBA Welterweight Elimination bout, and is to
take place in Panama, at the Gymnasium Nuevo Panama.

The 10-Round bout turns out to be an all-out war, with both fighters getting rocked.
But Emiliano emerges as the victor, by scoring the cleaner punches and wins a Unanimous Decision.

Emiliano had about a 2-second delay, then crashed onto his back.

In the you-tube tape, the beginning of the video is the opening
of the 6th Round. Roberto floored Emiliano at the opening seconds.

The knock-out, as you know, came later, in the 7th round.

Fought in late-June 1977, and scored a KO 8 over one-time Columbian amateur star,
Rodrigo Delgado 26-4-3 (15 KO's).

Improves to 29-4-1 (14 KO's) and earns a #6 WBA Welteweight. Was offered a
WBA Welterweight Championship bout against Pipino Cuevas, scheduled for August in
Los Angeles, California, but Manager Ramiro Machado turns down the bout, when he was offered
a poor fight purse of $12,500.

 

Emiliano Villa,

Defends his Columbian Welterweight Title in July 1977, by again fighting and defeating the
tough #17 WBC Welterweight Carlos Obregon 31-2-0 (20 KO's) once again, by a solid Unanimous 12-Round Decision.

Improves to 31-4-1 (15 KO's) in September 1, 1977, by scoring a KO 1 over Rafael Jiminez 9-4-1 (3 KO's).

Moves up to #5 WBA-ranked Welterweight, and #9 WBC-ranked Welterweight.

Emiliano is offered a tentative bout against WBC Welterweight Champion, Carlos Palomino,
for possible December 1977 date.

My you tube video stops with Emiliano flat on his back, from the right hand to the
temple (and delayed reaction).

It looks like he was on his back for '2' seconds, and then Carlos Beccoral starts
to count, maybe he got to a 3 or 4 count, then waves his hand over Emiliano's
face.
