November 9, 1978 K. B. Hallen - Copenhagen, Denmark A 10-Round Middleweight bout. Ayub Kalule, 24 1/2 year-old, with a record of 23-0-0 (15 KO's), and holder of the British-Commonwealth Middleweight Championship. Ray Seales, a 26 1/2 year-old veteran, posting a record of 46-4-2 (26 KO's), and holds the NABF Middleweight Championship. Both are crafty and slick-boxing southpaws, with fantastic amateur credentials. Kalule, a converted 5' 8 1/2" southpaw, with a piston-like right hand, has been campaigning at 156 lbs. The Great Ugandan, in '23-bouts' has yet to lose a round in the ring. Seales, a tall 6' 1" natural southpaw, with sharp jabs and whipping left hands, primarily fights at 160 lbs. 'Sugar Ray' is coming off a 'slug-fest' knockout victory over dangerous hard-hitting southpaw 'Slammin Sammy' Nesmith. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm still hunting for footage, ifanyone has it, or the 1979 documentary 'Kalule' which has some in it I'm led to believe, please let me know.
According to the Newspaper Account, Ayub Kalule swept the first '5-Rounds', with sharp right jabs and a handful of counter left-hands. Ayud focused on Seales right eye with his right hand, and had it partially closed by the end of Round 4. Ray Seales was fighting like he had 'cement shoes on', and showed no movement. Offensively he was 'limited' to an occasional right hook, as he plodded forward making it easier for Ayub to hit him. Ayub moved skillfully, and used clever punching to out-speed Seales, who was looking for the one-punch knockout with the left-hand. Kalule did put several double right-hands in, and had Seales baffled through the 5th-Round. But, in Round 6, Ayub started to slow down, and went flat-footed. That is where Seales was able to utilize his longer reach, and out-jab Ayub from long-range. In Rounds 7 and 8, Seales landed the harder punches, as he had Ayub fighting from a defensive stand-point. In Round 9, Ayub realizing he needed to stem-the-tide, was able to get under Seales right jab, and was able to outwork Ray a bit, by landing a few more inside punches, including a couple stiff right-hands. In the 'final round', Seales went on the attack, while Ayub jabbed and circled. Both fighters were a bit tired, but Seales had the better offense and did land a decent left hand that drove Ayub back. One Judge scored it Even. The other '2' officials had Ayub a 1-point winner. It was the 'first time' that Ayub had ever lost a 'scored round' in a professional bout.
Flea Man, One difficult fight to get information on. Those boys were very secretive in Copenhagen, about letting the world know about boxing results, especially close fights in which the home-country guy had a rough time. November 9, 1984 (K.B. Hallen - Copenhagen) The near 31 year-old - Ayub Kalule 42-3-0 (21 KO's) vs 27 1/2 year-old - Lindell Holmes 21-3-0 (19 KO's). ????
The Kalule vs Holmes fight was a rather dull, listless affair. By now Kalule was several years past-prime, and was just going through the motions. I haven't kept my old scorecards, but (as I recall it) he won easily enough... but looked pretty ordinary. I remember being very disappointed, that the 2 boxers weren't able to give us a more exceiting fight!
There may be some information, in reported newspaper accounts of the Lucien Rodriguez vs. Steffan Tangstadt 'European Heavyweight Championship' Ayub Kalule vs Lindell Holmes was on the undercard. Lindell Holmes, did make a comment a few years later, that the bout was cut from 10-Rounds to 8-Rounds, as the 'Denmark contingent' was concerned about Ayub going the longer distance with a 'hard-puncher' like myself, as I always came on strong in the later rounds.
You know fine well that's just to make Chris Eubank look better. Atberry plays a long convoluted game:yep
From what little information I can dig up. A Mogens Palle Promotion Lindell Holmes was accompanied to Copenhagen with Florida Cruiserweight, Dorcey Gaymon. Ayub must have scored fairly well for the first '3-Rounds', as Lindell pressed but was unable to land anything at all. But in Round 4, Lindell stunned Ayub, backed him up, and worked the Ugandan over. That's it for now.
