Oscar was stronger though and would be able to sit down on his punches much more imo.

I think his peak run was from molina to gonzalez personally. He was some fighter to watch in the lower weights.

Agree, albeit subsequent struggles at Welter were due to the tougher opposition rather than him being less effective per se at that weight.

Well top 5 at the weight imo.

I had him beating both vargas and taylor. But he got battered by vasquez early on.

Maybe it's just because I watched hurricane again last night but I think the best victory in the divisions history is carter's destruction of griffith.

I don't know where to rank Winky.

I thought he beat Taylor and Simon and pretty much held his own against Hopkins and Vargas.

That said, even throwing Mosley, Tito and Quartey in there, I don't think his resume is all that good.

He simply didn't get the fights he needed during his prime to carve out a great career. Beating welterweight re-treads is never going to make you a great, just ask Norris.

Clearly better than a Sergio Martinez, though that ain't saying much.

I think Oscar got by on physicality at the lower weights and lost that advantage at welter. Sure, the opposition got tougher, but I think if you scale that opposition down to 140, Oscar probably does a little better. Certainly wouldn't have lost the Tito bout and probably would have distnguished himself from Quartey too, though that poor performance at welter was due more to Oscar not being in the best shape (not discounting that Quartey was probably a little past his best).

Yeah, he's a tough one to rate.Getting good fights was a definite issue and he has a bit of a lennox lewis thing going on where his style changed as his physical gifts were declining.I'd like to have seen him against more good contenders when he was more mobile and that bit quicker of hand and foot

props to Mosley for fighting him when he did.Could have easily avoided that one.

All the weightclass jumping and changing trainers did him no good either, as far as being able to settle and comfortably grow into a natural style for him as a boxer-puncher.Easy to say with the benefit of looking back on it all, mind you, but i think he stifled himself a bit.

    Yeah good point.

In some ways, if he didn't have the opportunities he had (to change trainers, jump weight classes etc.), he probably would have ended up becoming a better fighter, if not a fighter with a better resume.

IMO he could have pretty much had 140 on lockdown for 10 years if he chose to go down that path. He may have still dropped a decision to a Mosley type by picking the wrong fight, but overall he was the superior fighter to Mosley and would have beaten him with the right strategy imo.

Yeah oscar could certainly have honed in at 140 as his bread and butter before finishing his career off at ww against the likes of mosley, spinks, forest and mayorga.

96-02 at lww then 02-06 at ww probably losing to floyd to finish his career off.
