IB Funfact: both are coming directly off UD losses; Azael "Candelilla" Villar in a rematch with Nicaraguan southpaw Gerardo David "El Cascabel" Zapata this past March, while Ricardo "Ricky" Astuvilca's came nearly a year ago versus René Manuel "Chulo" Santiago García of Puerto Rico. Santiago was a late sub for Villar himself - so we're finally getting this match 11.5 months later than originally planned.

 

This card will also give us I believe a first televised look at 2-0 heavyweight prospect Joseph "Joey Ming" Mesi of Buffalo, the nephew of "Baby" Joe Mesi.

 

Joseph Mesi vs. Alexis Soriano Taveras, 4 rounds @ heavyweight

 

Mesi mauling him, clobbering the body, Taveras constantly on the verge of going down but he survives the round.

 

Weird scene ...as they were getting ready to leave their stools for round two, some controversy erupted in Taveras' corner. There was some debate between him, the ref, and his corner. Finally some old white lady got up on the ring apron and leaned over the top rope to hug him (leading me to wonder if that was his grandma or something) and then ...she waved it off.

edit: the ring announcer clears it up, she's the ringside physician. Contest halted due to a shoulder injury to Taveras.

 

Taveras wasn't happy with the stoppage...nor was Mesi, who kept fuming about wanting to beat up Taveras for real because he "talked mad sh*t!"

 

Taveras has a bizarre career...turned pro in 2016 and went 3-0 at home in the Dominican Republic before disappearing for several years. Then returned in 2022 and has fought four times since...all early stoppage losses. Last two against relatives of retired famous heavyweights (Bruce Seldon Jr. and now Joseph Mesi)

 

Apparently this card is available on ESPN+ subscribers in the US (not all ESPN Knockout cards in Latin America are)

 

Miguel Antonio Estrada Montenegro vs. Sterling Love, 4 rounds @ light flyweight

 

Estrada is 2-0 and Love is 0-2, so...we know how this is supposed to go.

 

Miguel Antonio Estrada Montenegro was born and raised in London, Ontario, Canada - but his pro debut and sophomore bout were both down in Managua...so, I'm guessing he's Nicaraguan and has family down there? Pretty random to go that far away somewhere you have no connection to start your career when there are plenty of small hall shows in Ontario to hop on to build your record.
