Been watching lots of his fights lately. What a brilliant fighter he was .Any news on what he's doing now I know he owned a brewery in Ghana brewing Zoom beer !! Hope he ok seemed a good bloke.
Hope he`s safe during this corona outbreak, not enough ventalators in African countries to help the sick from this virus, sad.
I was in Atlantic City at the fight when he methodically chopped down Lupe Suarez day before the Tyson-Spinks fight. Julian Jackson iced a guy in one on the undercard. Saw Hector Camacho win at a different venue that night. And Big George won the night before. It was like going to a boxing convention.
Bit of a mystery to a lot of people, Nelson. Quite often a man of few words, but always very purposeful and stern with the words he did speak. Not a great deal was known about him personally during his career, and he's kept a relatively low profile in retirement, too. I read Ashley Morrison's biography of him a few years ago, but was quite disappointed by it. Wouldn't recommend it unless you're an absolute die-hard Zoomy fan. Although it was quite touching when it dealt with the subject of the death of Azumah's young wife Beatrice in 1990. Watched his title defence against Jim McDonnell not too long ago. Jim put up a great effort, but Nelson's stamina, extra bit of class as a fighter and superior power told in the end. I think he was a better Featherweight than he was a Super-Feather, yet it's at the higher weight where most of my favourite Nelson fights took place. His demolition of Fenech was astonishing (shades of Sanchez-Gomez in the way he took his opponent apart and how the fight unfolded) and I love those comeback beatdowns he put on Ruelas and Leija in those 1995 / 1996 rematches.
I don’t know what he’s been up to since he left boxing. Hopefully he’s leading a healthy and productive life. Loved watching him in action back in the day. Excellent precision hitter and solid chin. His stoppage of Jeff Fenech in their rematch was an excellent late career performance
I remember right after Nelson KOd Fenech in Australia he gave Ferdie Pacheco one of the most entertaining interviews I've seen. Ferdie had given Azumah a hard time after the 1st bout draw.
It was very impressive to see Azumah Nelson go into the 15th round against then legendary WBC World Featherweight Champion Salvador Sanchez on July 21 1982, in Madison Square Garden before being stopped. Nelson had something like 11 pro bouts but he did give Sanchez a good fight. And after that match went Azumah went on to stardom, having a great fighting career and being a great fighting champion.
