Hi guys. I am considering purchasing a Azumah Nelson career set and was wondering the quality of his resume. I have seen his fihts against legends like Salvador Sanchez, Pernell Whitaker and Wilfedo Gomez. However I know little about the likes of Mario Martinez, Juan Laporte, Patt Cowdell and Calvin Grove (etc). Were these viable world challengers who went there to win or were they stiffs turning up for a paycheck?. I know a little about Jesse James Leija and Gabriel Ruelas, but when he fought them were they in there prime? Thanks, I just don't wanna get a career set where he is knocking over a load of stiffs for challengers.
Without getting into an analysis of each individual fighters talent, i'd just say the majority of Nelson's opponents were legit worthy top ten rated fighters.generally ranging from average to very good/excellent. Not tocker pudwills or Morrade Hakkars.
Martinez, Laporte, Cowell, and Grove were very good fighters. Probably Grove was the lesser of that group but a good fighter. Laporte was a champion who battled tough with several great: Pedroza, Sanchez, Chavez, Nelson.
Al l the guys you mentioned were very good figters, The ko over Cowdell was classic. When Nelson lost to Leija in th e e 2nd fight,he gaveit his all but i dont think anyone would have beat Leija that night!
Do yourself a favour a get it. Nelson was an excellent fighter as you already know and a lot of his fights were against 'live' opponents
Azumah's fights were consistently intense I agree with the posting above. He was a dominant force in boxing for many years. He is one of my favorite fighters.
