Could Azumah have beaten Alexis at 126?

Yes he could..these are two of the fighters I enjoy the most..for my money I would go with Arguello, but to give Nelson no chance, would mean that you have not seriously watched him!

Alexis might have been too young for Nelson at 126...IMO. I really like Nelson's chances against almost all the featherweights during his reign...He was the package...At fight between these two at 130 would be tough to call...I might have to lean towards Arguello, due to his unbelieveable power at that weight.

I am not disputing your pick, merely questioning why Arguello would have been to young for Nelson at 126...FW Champ from 74-77 12 fights w 10 KO's...(22-25y/o) sounds perfect to me? He moved up because 1 he needed to and 2 there was nothing left for him at FW. Watch his fight with Olivares (my top 5 of Arguello fights) he had not unreal power at FW but unreal accuracy, and a clean stroke! I would love to see Azumah win this...My wife gets mad because all of my kids ran around the house Yelling ZUMA ZUMA absolutely one of my favs, outside of PHILLY BOYS...But Arguello would be all that he could handle at any weight...Perhaps Sal Sanchez+ (not a knock on Sal by any means!)

I haven't seen Arguello/Olivares in quite awhile honestly...From what I remember...Olivares was outboxing Alexis... until the 13th! I need to pop it in again, and have a look...I may be wrong but was Alexis 21/22 y/o?...I just thought AA would fare alot better at 130 with a little more maturity...against Azumah...I know I'm definitely in the minority on this but I think after Nelson beat Gomez...He would be super difficult to beat at 126...IMO he would have beaten Sanchez in the return if it could have happened(I'm not knocking Sanchez either...one of my favs.)Sounds like you've got a fun house...peace.

Man I would love to have seen Nelson Sanchez II...but it was not to be! I do agree that The Thin mans chances increase at SFW his power translated alot better than Azumahs...My wife hates boxing but the Azumah KD's of Gomez actually had her sitting on the edge of her seat! I love watching both guys and have no problem seeing it go either way...I think you would have to be crazy to unequivaclly state that either one had no shot! When you think that Sanchez was Nelsons 14th fight you have to wonder and excpect that he would perform better after that experience and a couple of fights..

Sorry missed that part..if stats are accurate his birth date is listed at 1952 making him 22 at the start and 25 at the end...the misprint is my fault! Peace

Azumah would take a strong unanimous decision over the still peaking Arguello in a fifteen rounder.Alexis would score occasionally, but Nelson would weather the storm and win.

Tough call. The heavier they go (up to 130, 140), the more I favor Arguello.

At 126, hard to say, but if Sanchez could stop Nelson, then the harder-punching Arguello should, too.

Would be a helluva fight until the end.

WOW, 5 years later and I still agree w/ me!!!! I believe it would be a very close fight, but that Arguello would likely score a stoppage late or eke out a razor thin decision....I would be cheering butt off for Azumah, and am not sure if I would cheer for anyone else over Arguello??? Both 2 of my fav's I just think Arguello would be a tad to much.

    Awesome match up.

    Toss a coin for me.

Both unbelievable fighters but if I had a gun held to my head I'd lean towards Nelson at 126. As somebody else said though the further up in weight they go the more the odds in Arguello's favour shorten.

Nelson was awesome, but objectively speaking I think Arguello was a tier ahead of him.

Alexis' firepower would be too much for Nelson in the long run.

    Arguello KO 12.

True to Azumah form, I can see him losing the first fight and then coming back and winning the return bout.

In the first match, he'll back himself to try and match firepower with Alexis, and will be encouraged to do so, because he'll probably hurt Arguello multiple times. But ultimately he will find out that Arguello is a little more resistant to his punches than he is to Alexis' punches, and probably suffer a late round KO.

In the rematch, he will take a box and move mentality in with him, ala the Laporte and Villasana fights, and should pile up enough points to carry a narrow edge over Alexis over 15. Even in the retun bout, Nelson will have some hairy moments and be close to going, but he'll hold on when he needs to and take the duke.
