If Azumah Nelson, 49, is able to get past Jeff Fenech, 44, on June 24 at Melbourne's Vodafone Arena, he would consider returning for a second fight later in the year against Julio Cesar Chavez Sr, 46. Nelson is coming back after nearly a decade and Fenech has not fought since 1996. Nelson hopes to repeat the knockout performance that he achieved over Fenech in 1992. Chavez last fought in 2005. Nelson told Ghana Web that it was Chavez who approached him for a fight a few months ago and because he was in poor physical shape, he turned the Mexican legend down. If he performs well against Fenech, he would like to accept Chavez's offer. “It was Chavez who proposed the fight some few months back, but I wasn’t in the best of shape so I declined his request,” said Nelson. "Regular visits to the gym places me in a better position to face any challenge that lies ahead. I am in constant touch with Chavez to make the dream fight come true.” This content is protected
as much respect as I have for both fighters, The old-folks tour makes sense in golf. . . . boxing aint golf.
As long as they're fighting other old fighters, what's the difference?? It should be a competitive match between fighters of reasonably equally declined abilities. There is nothing wrong with a "Seniors Tour" in boxing, imo - as long as they stick to fighting each other and don't get crazy ideas in their heads like they can compete with today's world class fighters.
Make the Shavers vs Ellis fight on June 18, 2008 and it would be 35 years to the day that Shavers crushed Ellis in one round.
I'm not chomping at the bit to see it myself, but if these guys can pass physicals, there's no reason why they shouldn't be allowed to fight each other. Truthfully, if boxing had a more clearly defined seniors division these guys could make a little money and it might keep them from getting beat up by younger guys looking for a "name" opponent on their ledger.
