I remember watching this fight years ago, I recently looked up the bout on boxrec and was surprised how close the judges had it. Its been a long time, maybe I'll have to watch it on YouTube, but I remember Nelson completely dominating the power punching Gomez. Then again my memory may be off, and I've never followed the lighter weight classes too much. Can anyone add any info on this fight to my hazy memory?
The location got to the judges, the scoring was terrible. Nelson was winning that bout. Gomez threw so many low blows too. In his next fight, also at San Juan against Rocky Lockridge he was gifted a decision. No way did he beat Lockridge.
It’s funny the narrative spun by the Gomez side if you read the book by Guidace and the documentaries on Gomez was that he was way ahead but his legs failed him. The way I saw it he was behind and tiring. Nelson was up at least 2-3 rounds coming into the 11th. I do think Gomez spent himself in the Sanchez and Pintor fights and with his lifestyle was diminished. The LaPorte one he pulled it out because that was such a big fight for him and Puerto Rico but was his last great one.
I scored this not too long ago and this is how I had it and what I wrote: Round 1: 10-9 Nelson Round 2: 10-10 Even Round 3: 10-9 Nelson (I think Bernstein gave this to Gomez but he missed more than he landed - his timing got better as the fight went on) Round 4: 10-9 Nelson Round 5: 10-9 Gomez Round 6: 10-9 Gomez Round 7: 10-10 Even Round 8: 10-9 Nelson Round 9: 10-9 Gomez Round 10: 10-9 Nelson Round 11: KO for Nelson Through 10 completed rounds I had Nelson up 97-95. I believe officially that Gomez was leading on two judges scorecards and even on the third. I can assure you that the Puerto Rican audience carried a lot of influence. Two of the best officials I've seen - **** Young and Harry Gibb - seemed rattled in San Juan. Young had Gomez leading in this fight and Gibb let Gomez get away with murder in the Zarate fight. Also here you can see Octavio Meyran would not take points from Gomez for continuous low blows.
