I think this is a showcase performance from Nelson. He gets in a bit of bother early doors but shows variety and adaptability in keeping things nip and tuck. In the final rounds we see him box and move, pick his spot and then really sit down on his punches. A full range from the wee man.

This is a great, great stoppage. The punch that really gets the damage done is the one that scores the first KD at around 6.15. Nelson just moves his upper body across to make room for that punch and Martinez, he doesn't see it coming. Great, accurate punch brough across with mainline-torque. You can see the message of destruction reach Martinez's brain in stages as he trickles backwards and down.

The finishing combo at 7.20 is absolutely beautiful. At first, Nelson had gone for fast volume to try to get his man finished, but when he got it coming back, he went back to the bike and picked his spot for these crisp, accurate, short shots. Good refereeing to get right in there. Anyway:

The whole fight is on YouTube and is well worth your time, it's got an exciting opening.

I've always thought this was Nelson's best all-around performance. In fact, I'd say the stretch of wins he had at this time (Martinez, Rovere, McDonnell) probably represents his peak.

Incidentally, I don't remember ever seeing Martinez go down and hurt from a punch as he was here. Even when he was stopped by Chavez, he stayed on his feet and took punch after punch.

I think that's probably quite right.

Mario Martinez was a very, very good fighter. Excellent and impressive performance by 'the Professor'.

Haven't seen enough of him to be honest. Only clips of the Whitaker fighter, his destruction of Cowdell, some highlights, and the 7 consecutive hooks to poor Martinez's face. What can you tell me about him?

He was good. Watch this entire fight when you get time for an idea of how good, then track down his first two with Fenech, Sal Sanchez and Gomez for additional treats.

My dad's mate hates him. I don't know if you caught the story from yesterday's thread, but my dad attended the Cowedell vs Nelson fight. Well, my dad's mate went to go get the drinks in just before the fight would kick off, he was a little delayed, and got back only for Cowdell to be taking a 10 count. Ouch.

I've just purchased a partial career set for Nelson, gets delivered in about a week, I hope to have a more insightful comment for you by then, other than the WOW! that I can manage just now after watching that finish :good
