I thought Nelson lost the first fight to Mario Martinez tbh, if i remember right Martinez also dropped him in that fight. Helluva a boring fight but i still thought Martinez edged it. Nelson did a job on him in the rematch though.
I also felt Martinez won their first bout by a couple of points with the kd sealing the deal, however I do not think the fight was boring by any means. The fight did start off a bit slowly but once Martinez upped the pace in the mid-rounds and started taking the fight to Nelson the action picked up considerably and stayed that way until the finish. As for the rematch Nelson had all the answers to whatever Mario attempted, and try he did but to no avail, masterful performance by the professor in that fight.
IMO, Nelson was one of the most ruthless and impressive finishers in history when he had an opponent wounded.
Maybe im being a bit harsh there, it was more absorbing than boring. I enjoyed the fight but it did not really light my fire :bbb Did you see his fight with Calvin Grove ? that seemed a bit controversial to me, not to mention the first Ruelas fight. I did not score either of those fights though so i could be making more of it than i should be.
This was shown on the beeb and BSB (the undercard of Tyson/BrunoI) and the buzz was Azumah had jumped the shark. I guess it shows with hindsight, how good he actually was.
I watched both fights yesterday having forgotten they were on the same card, and if you'd asked me I would have said there were 5 years between them. No idea why.
Agreed. I thought Grove basically "quit" about halfway through and let Nelson control the middle and late rounds. I thought Nelson won at least 7, maybe 8 rounds and scored a KD as well, making him a fairly clear winner. I remember against Ruelas, Ruelas won most of the early rounds and Nelson came back late. I'd have to watch again to see if Nelson's late rally was really enough to pull out the decision. Close fight either way.
If you can. You must check out the Sanchez fight. A young unknown kid, gives Sanchez all he could handle in a wild action packed fight. Salvador finally is able to put this young upstart away in a furious 15th round! Great fight, Sadly Sanchez' last...
