I totally agree that one loss to an ATG doesn't ruin a fighter. Hopkins himself lost his first pro fight to a nobody, Hagler on his way up lost two fights to decent but not great fighters. The thing that worries me about Pavlik is his change in persona, or maybe that the nice kid/blue collar work ethic image was partially a media creation and he always had personal problems. His comments on the super six, the lack of acknowledgement of Hopkins' skills after the loss, the injuires and strange responses about alcohol rumors...not the mental makeup of a strong person in my opinion.
He's got to get back into the ring if he wants to be taken seriously. Bad losses linger in a sport that's almost defined by "what have you done for me recently?". He fought Hopkins a year ago and since then his career has been a fight with Rubio and a million rumors of him being an alcoholic. He should be kicking ass and taking names.
good post my man :good ill admit when i saw the thread title i just shook my head thinking it was another pav hate story...pleasantly surprised... Pav catches a lot of **** on here and elsewhere, and little (but some nonetheless) is justified. but no matter what anyone says... 1. catching **** isnt new for him. he was a tune-up for miranda on edison's way to a big face off w/ jermain. he was completely belittled by steward prior to the jt fight. just listen to some of steward's comments about him. 2. he has stopped EVERY single mw to step into the ring w/ him and that includes the former undisputed undefeated mw kingpin. 3. he jumped up two weight classes to fight an atg hof cagy **** who happened to be the best lhw in the world and bit off WAY more than he can chew (seems like i saw some of that over the wknd but somehow pav is a joke and marquez is a warrior) when he had some documented disadvantages (whether you choose to put much into those is up to you) 4. miranda hitting him with every thing he had, taylor hitting him w/ everything he had, and 180+ lbs of bhop hitting with everything he had couldnt stop him but somehow pw is going to stop him?? pw is going to need those 100 punches plus a round and a large caliber firearm to stop him (not talking UD here, talking ko/tko) i'll say that i really do enjoy pw and think he is great for boxing. he has talked his share of **** about the fight but he does seem like a decent guy who always comes to fight and boxing can't get enough of that. that being said, these pav haters always were pav haters, its just now they think they are justified in coming out of the woodwork to kick the guy when he's down. as long as the old kelly shows up on the 5th, he'll win and look good doing it. think miranda throwing almost 100 punches and kelly walking through it and leaving him slumped in the ropes...if the old kelly doesnt show up...:verysad
To be fair , a guy with Pavs ( fairly ) straightforward style was always likely to be in trouble against someone as tricky and experienced as Hopkins. I also wonder if Pavlik and Taylor before him are suffering form being under Bhops shadow. The guy dominated the division for so long that the guys coming along after had a lot to live up too, and the fact that rather than retire Hopkins moved up and continued to be succesful thus keepin him in the public eye. Taylor didn't blow away a couple fo smaller guys and the knives were out for him and now Pavlik is in the same boat. I bet Kelly is wishing he'd never seen that ****ing Hopkins contract ! I reckon he beats Williams though ! Williams is busy and all but he's not got Hopkins trickiness I think Pavliks heavier hands will wear him down late.
Amen to this too... I almost wish now he HAD just fought Mora. Just like you say, boxing is very "what have you done lately" and this inactivity is killin'.
The good side of that though is , beat Williams , KO Mora ( or someone similair ) and its all good again ! So long as his head is right he'll be back stronger
Pavlik has been getting seriously underrated as of lately. I can't believe I'm saying this, but so has Cotto. A year ago, nobody would've picked Williams to beat Pavlik and Pacquiao to beat Cotto. Now, everyone is assuming that they both will lose their upcoming bouts. Personally, I'm picking Pavlik to beat Williams. Williams has the tools to give Pavlik a lot of trouble. However, he doesn't have a lot of power and his defense is spotty. That will be his undoing IMO. I'm picking Pac to beat Cotto, but it should be a good fight. I think Pac's speed and power will still be effective at the weight. If he can avoid that left hook from Cotto, Pac should get the win. Then again, Pac had a hard time avoiding wide, sweeping hooks from Marquez. Cotto also has the size advantage and should be able to fight a swarming style, which is when he's at his best.
Don, this is not directed at you, but at the point you have there and the many folks that do feel that way.... I just don't get people bitchin' makin' a big ass deal out of Pavlik havin' a few beers if he wants to...I mean got damn...Ricky Hatton is idolized for that very reason. The man is a living Guinness commercial, and nothing is wrong with that. Just like Hatton, it's been long known, Pavlik also enjoys to play darts in a league...people have a few drinks when they play, nothing new. As far as the folks "not on the train"...I say **** on fair weather fans.
At first i did pick Pavlik to knock Williams out but after watching the first fight he had with Taylor again im not to sure. I noticed the rounds where Taylor let his hands go and used his handspeed it kinda shut Pavlik down abit and cut down his work rate slightly, the problem was Taylor wasnt able to do this the whole fight. But Williams has the stamina to do so and also has very good handspeed and throws from angles, with these attributes Pavlik may not be able to get of at all for the whole fight as much as he'd want to. If Williams can take Pavliks punch Williams wins UD IMO.
Haha, Fair point and your right there are too many fans that change direction more than wind. The difference between Hatton and Pavlik though is that Hatton is a big drinker like a lot of men are especially in some parts of Englands where sitting down for pints in the local pub all day with friends is part of the culture. People are saying Pavlik is an alcoholic. That doesnt mean drinking loads with your pals down the local bar/pub. That means you have a problem which is affecting your performnace in daily life. Of course at this point its all rumours but some sources seem pretty convincing.
Def agree with the Cotto point. Before Marg he was an animal. He's done all he had to in my view and his one loss is now questionable.
