Yeah, Hopkins didn't have Mackie for the Winky fight. Mackie is the best at what he does. And i agree that Hopkins looked more stronger against Tarver. He also looked like he had a better overall body in terms of muscle definition against Tarver.
Calzaghe has a tendency to look down when coming forward and that is never good. Calzaghe has to be careful cause everytime he covers up, his head comes across his front foot, saying that his balance is in front of him. Calzaghe has no defense for a straight right hand coming from his left ( Starie, Woodhall, Reid and even Kessler - was hit until the last bell). But the main thing should be: Hopkins is very solid fundamentally and Calzaghe does slap a lot, fast but not that powerfully. Nard could catch him in the exchanges. This content is protected
Joe Calzaghe constantly leaves his hands down at his waist because he feels he has quicker reflexes than he actually has. I've seen him get tagged on many occasions as a result of this. He needs to stop showboating, get his hands up and get down to business against Hopkins. Hopkins will invite Joe Calzaghe in. He knows Joe isn't comfortable unless he is counter punching. His lack of knockout power will also motivate Hopkins. I'm not sure, but I bet Hopkins isn't afraid one bit of getting hit in the face by Joe Calzaghe. That isn't to say he will walk through his punches, because Hopkins doesn't like to get hit. Bernard Hopkins has the skills to upset Joe Calzaghe. He is a great counter puncher himself, has a granite chin, and will employ roughouse tactics if need be. Just as I said. Hopkins will lay back and invite Calzaghe onto him and pick him off with counter right hands. He will tie Joe up, showboat, and use every other mental advantage he can whilst countering his way to a UD.
That's what i've been thinking also. And i think that's what made Hopkins so tentative against JT IMO. JT sits down on his punches and has power behind them. Calzaghe is a volume puncher. And that should make Hopkins less tentative to commit when he feels like doing so. And i agree with everything else.
Defense should only count if offense is ot sacrificed. The way I see it is it should be pretty simple. The guy that took the least amount of damage wins the round. if I threw 100 punches but only landed 20 you did a great job defensivly keeping me to 20% connects and making me miss 80 shots. But if you only landed 5 of your own, I win the round even if you only threw 5 and landed at 100% (this is all assuming that all of these shots were comparable in effectivness). I outlanded you 4 to one therefore you took more damage than me and your defense means jack ****.
Are you for real? Of course not getting hit is part of defense. But this is the thing you dont seem to understand, so I'll spell it out for you. YOU DONT SCORE POINTS BY NOT GETTING HIT. ONLY WHEN YOUR PUNCHES LAND ON YOUR OPPONENT DO YOU SCORE. Do you think if a fighter runs for 12 rounds and manages to not get hit much will win him the fight? Only if he lands more or better quality of punches will he score a win. Evading punches is what a fighter does WHILST DELIVERING HIS OWN SHOTS!!!! Defense never scored a point or won a fight.
I never said that you can win a fight on defense alone. I just said that this aspect is seldom noticed by judges.
And worst than what I've been previously sayin - he drops his hands, punches from his waist and thinks he has the handspeed and footwork to go along with it and potshot em all the way... He clearly doesn't have the smarts and the tools to rely on that sort of game... This content is protected
I'm wondering what Hopkins plan will be if Calzaghe is content to stay outside, move to his right, and just keep a busy jab in his face? Let's not forget that Joe is much, much lighter on his feet than Hopkins recent opponents. Is there any chance Calzaghe ends up forcing Bernard to come forward?
Hop's must fight him inside. Kessler had his moments in their fight and Hop's is a master at tying one up and banging inside, ask Winky:good That has to be the plan. I expect a very motivated Hopkins to be stronger inside and if he can manage to not let Joe use space? Might be another upset. I'm a Hop's fan but logically? Calzaghe should be able to use his speed to win rounds. I'm torn between respect for Joe and Hop's determination. Gotta favor JC but expect a very tough fight. The rougher the better for Hopkins:good
If Calzaghe does that Hopkins has little choice but to take the fight to Calzaghe and make it a rough and ugly fight. If Bernard let's Calzaghe stay on the outside and jab all fight, Hopkins loses the fight.
Why the hell is that referee getting in the way there? And them Brits complain about Cortez in the Hatton bout...!
