Was watching a few B-Hop fights last night and was pretty impressed by his punching power. I'm not sure how you guys on ESB rate it but he was rocking Pascal, Wright and Pavlik constantly. on top of that knocking down Tarver and Calzaghe suggest he has genuine power as all 5 guys yet to be stopped. I'm not sure whether it's his genuine punching power or more down to his technicalities, timing and the fact he can land big clean straight right hands at will :think. How do you guys rate his punching power? Discussss
De La Hoya weighed in a pound over the Jr.Middleweight limit and Hopkins was 2 pounds over. Last time Hopkins got a KO was against a smaller man, with a body punch. Before that it was a TKO in 2003.
Hopkins used to have more power but age has taken a lot of it away. Robert Allen, who fought him about 50 times, said the last time he fought him that Hopkins didn't punch quite as hard anymore. Always watch Hopkins Pre-Tito to get a better idea of how great a fighter he was.
typical ******* bringing up their juiced up "hero" in a discussion in which he is completely irrelevant.
Hopkins has a great right hand, but doesn't finish top fighters too well and isn't aggressive enough to break a lot of guys down. Good punching power, but nothing special.
Never rated his power to be honest. He used to break people down with accumulation early in his career (Mercado 2), or he catches them unawares cause he knows how to lead people into shots that they dont see(Calzaghe) He hit Mercado with the kitchen sink. If he were any kind of puncher he would of had him outta there much sooner imo.
uh oh! Cloud vs Pascal just got a lot more interesting after that statement. it is true. as far as the question, Hopkins has lost A LOT of power. being 47, it's hard enough landing a punch at his age, as Pascal rocked him several times. his power comes more from his technique than anything. Hopkins throws full body punches. He steps fully into them and lands his punches at the end of his swings. because his hand speed was never dominating, his punches had more stinging effect than whopping effect. and although he steps into his punches, he doesn't sit on them, being the cautious fighter that he is. I give his power a B. it's certainly strong enough make his opposition fight very cautiously, as many of them do. and his left hooks to the body almost stopped pascal in their first match.
Similar to Floyd in a way that he's not super muscular nor is he powerful in an usual sense but when you get hit the way Bernard hits people ( Perfectly times punches ) it tends to keep you at bay
hopkins doesnt go for the finish because he is only interested in winning. the last time he tried to finish someone was william joppy(he looked like an elephant after the fight) because he had a bet with him. in his younger years, hopkins was a machine. only guy to stop glencoffee johnson who is as hard and solid as they come.
