A fight nearly broke out between Bernard Hopkins and Joe Calzaghe today during their first face-to-face meeting at the MGM Grand Media Center in Las Vegas. "I would never let a white boy beat me," Hopkins told reporters. "You can print that. I would never lose to a white person." WOW, I wonder if Calzaghe said he would "never lose to a black boy," would that be a problem for Bernard?? I would have to assume turning his fight with Calzaghe into a race war is not the way to go. I am surprised and extremely disappointed, shocked, really, that Hopkins would resort to this. That kind of takes away a little bit of the respect I had for him ("fighting scared" against Taylor didnt help, either). By the way, Will Jesse and Al condemn him for this?
Hopkins showed no class, but I think he was just trying to hype the fight as opposed to being just a racist *****.
I'm a big Hopkins fan, but even I can see that what he did was wrong. Combined with breaking his promise to his dead mother, I just lost some respect for the guy.
HE HAS NEVER BEATEN A GOOD WHITE FIGHTER come to think of it, it shows he has no class and why did he let Taylor beat him because he was Black
John, have you ever encountered that as a fighter, being a White American? Also, that is James Toney with in your avatar. Is Toney acctually a nice guy? It is almost hard to imagine him not taking trash.
What is Hopkins still doing fighting years later if it was such a factor in that fight? Sure he was 40, but he was running like a 32 year old, it didnt effect his running ability. The ****er was running and not throwing punches.
Yeah, to tell u the truth, James was and is one of the coolest people I know in this game..we spent a lot of time together in training camp and he was and is so much different than most would picture him.(Thinking about it, despite his recent missteps, I think Floyd is similar). James and I had a lot of fun in training camps, etc..so much so that I wriote an entire chapter in my book about him called 'Fun and Games with James Lights Out Toney.' As far as the racism in boxing, I cant really say I have ever felt it among other fighters. When I was an amateur I was the only white boxer at either 156 or 165 to make the Olympic Trials and I often would be the only, or one of the few, white fighters in the finals of a tournament or in a training camp but I can't say that I ever encountered disrepect or anything because of my color.
Bernard just lost another fan.. I was on the fence with this fight, but rooting for my fellow American. That's out the window and I'm in Joe's corner now. FU Bernard
It's kind of tasteless and it plays to the worst instincts in people, but I am sure Hopkins' motivation has NOTHING to do with black or white, and everything to do with GREEN. :nod
Its a disgusting comment:good Yet its a part of Hopkins fighting nature. He uses psychology to get or set an edge mentally. I respect ya HOp's, but a shoud retract that ****.
He isn't a racist. Hopkins needs to make this sell in the U.S. This kind of statement draws press. Simple as that.
