The impact of racism in the form of socioeconomic oppression is what has traditionally been viewed as its worst evil. That is to say, endemic racism, at least as it applies in America, has resulted in economic stratification, social segregation, restriction to ceratin housing markets, hiring and promotional schemas, minority members' psychological issues and minority access issues relating to a variety of social services and opportunities. These have never been issues faced by whites. I fail to see how a black man making a prideful remark about a "white boy" has any impact that could help to reinforce or worsen endemic socioeconomic oppression of white men by black men in America. Why is this? Because it never has existed and the worst impact of racism in America has always been felt by non-whites. The net result of this, for me, at least is a knowledge that nothing Hopkins said (and I think he misspoke while selling the fight -- hell, I think that he and JC planned it out beforehand) will ever have an impact on my life in the slightest way as a white male in America and all of the old women out there who have never suffered the massive social and psychological traumas of racism need to lighten up.

One thing on this board that I find a little disturbing is how quick whites are to jump all over every single white boxer with the slightest amount of talent as the next big thing (especially if he beats a black man); how many of the folks here want to make it clear that Hopkins should be more grateful to white boxing promoters for helping his career (the next time Bob Arum, et al take a hard shot to the head, let me know); and how little folks in these parts are willing to forgive a black man for misspeaking in the heat of the moment even though he really didn't say anything all that offensive. The above, to me, speaks of a hidden racism that still runs though the subconscious of this nation. Perhaps Hopkins is wrong to raise the spectre of Holmes/Cooney, but that is only because he knows that boxing fans want it.

Moreover, if saying he would never lose to a "white boy" is so offensive, why were all of you not jumping over Vargas for his "God is Mexican" comment? And, honestly, how many of us do not hear things in private from family and co-workers that are a million times worse that we fail to speak out about because we lack the anonymity of an Internet forum?

It seems the real reason everyone is so worked up is not because they are offended by what Hopkins said has nothing to do with their being personally hurt by being called "white boys," but by the fact that they can't call someone else any of the various offensive terms reserved by whites for blacks. Like his style or not, Bernard Hopkins has literally fought his way into obtaining his part of the American dream in a way most of us never will. He won't end up poor like so many black fighters who naively trusted their white promoters and managers. His personal discipline remains something to be admired.

In short, I am still a fan. And I bet, Calzaghe, whom the comment was directed at, doesn't give a damn either.

Hopkins is an intelligent man...I am sure he could think of more sophisticated and effective ways of getting the mental edge over someone like Calzaghe...he just didn't think though...this wasn't planned...it just came out...this is why I think that people who think he was hyping a possible fight are mistaken - he will never fight Joe and this is further indication, to me...

White as the driven snow and Nordic looking as hell. I kind of take it as a compliment, however, that you would consider me so unenlightened as to be black.

I guese it depends on where your at. At one tournament I was the only white guy among roughly one hundred fighters and hundreds of fans which all treated me great and even cheared me. They did allow the super heavy to fight in heavy and picked me to fight him first though. My black coach was a joke though. He was actually wolfing down portions of my team mates food because they were making weight. I did not need to make weight but he still wanted me to give him some of my food out of what he called respect for my team mates. I said screw that and so he actually tried to kick me out of the tourney for disrespect. Officials allowed me to fight though and I was the only one on our team to win. :rofl

In another tournament I was actually attacked by a mob of Latin fans after I fell out of the ring on top of my apponent who by the I later found out was 30 lbs. heavier than me. His wife hit me in the head with her shoe but my black and latin team mates kicked the mobs arse.:thumbsup

Before I started boxing I had a black boss who was an exboxer. I was the only white employee and our job was to set up boxing rings, fetch fighter's towels, tape etc.. and clean up but I was the only one that the boss would ever make clean up food and cigarrette butts.

If your white and a boxer by yourself its not the fighters you have to worry about its the officials. Be alert at all times. They have have made me fight twice guys way bigger than me and the third time they tried to substitute a much bigger guy on me at the last minute. I fussed a bit and what do you know my original apponent mysteriously shows up from no where.:-(

So, you're so much more enlightened than everyone else that you deem it ok for Bernard Hopkins to utter his inane racist remarks to compensate for historical wrongs. Listen, RACISM IS RACISM, whether it comes from a white man, a black man, an Arab, a Latino, an Eskimo, etc.,.. It's part of the problem of what's wrong with America, when one group is censored, villified and condemned by the Almighty P.C. forces that rule this country, and so-called "Judges" of character like Al "Tawana Brawley" Sharpton try to drive the offender out of the marketplace and raise holy hell about it around the clock, with "Hate crimes" and diversity training and all that kind of crap, and then another group is told, "it's allright, you can say anything you want to", that creates this double standard garbage that perpetuates the problem of racism. Blacks are being fed the bull**** that "only whites can commit racism", and this is itself a form of racism, in that it tell blacks that they are too superior to form racist thoughts. People will never be able to put this garbage to rest until they begin to take the responsibility, everyone, to a man to agree that ALL racism is wrong. Being a guilt-ridden caucasian and pronouncing it okay for blacks to say racist things isn't doing blacks, or anyone else any favors.

Real racist don't just come out and say it and to label a person racist, you have to look for a pattern. Hops is a public figure, this is the first time I've heard him speak like this. I'm still inclined to think this is just a publicity ploy or just a fight/survival type of a response where you don't really mean what you say.
Being non-white or black, I'm more wary of those prim and proper people that don't want other races to look at their daughter or sister, be their neighbor or their friend and the only minority employee that they have is the janitor. Funny thing is that they are always the most vocal in calling somebody a racist, be they white, black, hispanic, asian... whatever.

Oh I should say that I have learned first hand that there are many a red neck out there that are worse. You know how they like to drive up upon an innocent black person and hit them in the back of the head. Well one day I was riding bikes with several black boys and this redneck in a big 4x4 decided to throw a colt 45 beer bottle at the boys heads. It missed and knocked me about six feet off my bike.

No wonder white boys can hardly walk through the ghetto.

Hopkins, Alli and Tyson just throw gas on the fire.

Hopkins only says these things to get people to watch him fight. His style is very unappealing to most fans so he has to get people interested in some way.

Idiots, racist idiots on all sides, in all races, in all colors. Hate is all the same. There's always an innocent victim in any case. Boxing dosen't need this kind of ****. I've always had my favorites that weren't white, who I'd root for against the white guy, as a matter of fact. Back in the thirties and forties, so many white boxing fans would cheer themselves hoarse for Joe Louis, no matter that it was a white guy he was beating on, and that's just one fighter as an example. Boxing really should be colorblind.
