Actually it was a right hand from Penn that landed on Hughes while Hughes was on his back that did him in, in the 1st fight. But yeah I agree, it was infact a punch that changed the fight for Matt. I still remember the smacking noise as it landed on Hughes's face, that how hard in landed It was brutal. Penn always had great hands. One of my old trainers trained BJ on his Boxing a while back. I think Penn would TKO Johnson. I think it would be an exciting fight because Johnson would go for it. But Johnson is wild and if he comes at BJ like that, he's gonna run into something. When BJ counters he doesn't step away, he stays in range to hit you back. He keeps himself in a position where when his opponent commits, he's still right there in an excellent position to counter. Alot of people look at how Koscheck beat Johnson, I don't. I look at how Clementi did it. Clementi really scrapped with Johnson and was the first guy to take it right at him. I think BJ would counter Johnson early, then start to come at him. Kinda like he did with Diego. I think Penn either TKO's Johnson or ends up choking him out like Clementi did.
I realize all that, sillyhead, but the parallel, despite one pair being shot and the other looking in top form, is that both pairs have already battled to a pretty unambiguous conclusion twice. Could BJ win? Sure, just as Tito could win. It still won't erase the memory of having come up the lesser man on two previous nights (barring a 4th...would that then be the "rubbermatch" in either scenario? :think).
DANA wants this fight.... probably more than either of those 2. Options are limited and would love to see them fight again. Hopefully Penn decides to get some more cardio in him this time!
I think Penn should fight a couple of contenders at WW first. He needs to really beef up and then settle at that weight. When he last fought GSP, he didn't add any muscle, just flab. It's impossible to beat GSP like that.
Doubtful.GSP is fighting Hardy in late March and Vancouver are talking early June. That would be a quick turn around for GSP.
GSP is the best 170 ever. I think BJ needs to fight at 170 and GSP fight at 185. New challenges for what appears like invincible guys at their weight. It's funny cos both of them do have alot of good fighters in their division but that's just it GOOD fighters. These guys need SPECIAL opponents. For some reason though, MMA doesn't want to see solid champs defending multiple times. I am not against BJ fighting Maynard and GSP fighting Hardy. These guys should set records of number of defences etc These are huge achievements. It shouldn't just be about the opponent but also the legacy. UFC has the issue that every card they need to try and justify as a PPV.
Like alot of people have said above he should have to beat at least 1 top 5 guy before he get's another shot. Beating guys at 155 shouldn't get you a free pass for a title shot at 170. Besides he's 0-3 in his last 3 fights at ww.
Achiles, I agree, both do need new challenges, and at present whilst both have excellent fighters to face neither looks at all likely to lose to anyone in their division, so a "Move up" is a logical option. The problem is that the champions they would be facing at the weights you mentioned are ATG's. To my knowledge (And I do not know Georges so I could easily be wrong) GSP has, at present, no interest in fighting Anderson Silva. If he had, that "Mega fight" would have been made and it would be made in no time. When you consider the UFC champions, Lesnar, has no division to "Move up" to (And the guy would have to remove both of his legs to make 205), Machida is imo too small to seriously consider a crack at the current heavyweight champ, but Anderson Silva would have fought the 205 champ by now, were it not for the fact that he and Lyoto are very close friends and BJ (You've gotta love him) would probably fight GSP as often as he could! I am a huge GSP fan and I have been ever since I saw him beat Jay Heiron, but if I may, could I pose a question? If GSP remains at 170 and defeats all-comers for the next 5 years, but never challenges the 185 champ, could that prove in any way detrimental to his legacy? He will undoubtedly be considered as the greatest 170lb fighter ever by many and for many years to come, but mma is still in it's infancy and in the years to come I envisage numerous great champions securing titles at multiple weights which would be something the great man could never achieve if he never challenged the 185 champ. Imo he will challenge the 185 champ, but not for a year or so at least. He is still relatively young and i'm sure it will occur.
I would like to see it again. Especially the way B.J. is fighting at the moment. If he gets beat then that's it as far as fighting him again.
