Looking in at his record it's actually pretty damn good.[YT][/YT] " Some of his MMA achievements include defeating fighters Trevor Prangley, Maurício Rua, and Jeremy Horn in a single night at IFC's Global Domination tournament. Sobral also holds wins over Chael Sonnen, Robbie Lawler, Elvis Sinosic, Lee Hasdell, Kiyoshi Tamura(2x), Mikhail Ilyukhin, Maurice Smith, Tsuyoshi Kohsaka, Jose Landi-Jons, Travis Wiuff, David Heath, Rodney Glunder, Mike Whitehead, Bobby Southworth, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, Tatsuya Mizuno, and Cyrille Diabaté."
Very tough guy. I used to love watching him fight. Sadly, he wasn't able to evolve along with the sport. He's a really good BJJ blackbelt. He beat all of those guys using superior BJJ. But eventually people got better at defending his JJ and got better at striking. Unfortunately for him, his striking just didn't evolve quickly enough to keep up. Add in that he's been on the receiving end of some bad KO's so his chin is shot....retirement was a good idea for him.
Chuck was a grapplers nightmare though.. Possibly the best counter wrestler the UFC has ever had. I think a prime Chuck would even be a major problem for Bones with his TDD and counter striking.
Yea he's been my favorite fighter for awhile. His look and demeanor was just terrifying. When he choked you, you literally thought he wanted to kill the guy. I had the pleasure of getting a private lesson from him while he was at American Top Team teaching a seminar. He locked in a D'Arce Choke and had me catching Zzz's in no time.
His record speaks for itself and he even maintained his contender status when the talent pool and skill set of MMA deepened.
WAS is the key word. And Shogun wasn't exactly in his prime when Babalu got to him. Babablu was a great fighter. He just got old and didn't evolve with the rest.
