Bravo. Of course this is the case. Why does there existing such a sport in the 21st century as boxing or kickboxing or MMA. It's because we humans share the same desire for gladiatorial combat as the ancients. This is why boxing or combat sports will never die.

Good read, but i wouldn't turn back to gladiator fighting. I've seen their "gloves", and they were no less than lethal weapons.

I don't know statistics, but i doubt any boxer had a career longer than 2-3 fights without losing both eyes.

Bare knuckle boxing, gypsies style, is more interesting; but still has its limitations in how knock outs would be too frequent, and also cuts and swelling.

I would keep it the way it is; only remove that stupid rule a boxer must be up by 8, or stable by 10; a punch more won't hurt anyone and give us real legit kos.

And people should vote with their wallets: if a fighter is too dirty or boring, don't pay him. Period. This would change things immediately. But people be stupid an ****.

This is true, but people become very defensive about the defensive stick and move style because it gets derided so much.

As for the ts. This takes me back to my first political science class way back in the last century. It was an eye opener. He said both conservatives and liberals want change, change is the constant. It's the direction that is different. Liberals want to move forward and conservatives want to move backward. I never understood why anyone ever would want to move backward, but one thing is for sure, a whole lot of people definitely do want that. Anyways, all sports have evolved from their true form into a more civilized form. The best example is fencing. I know you don't want to go back to it's primitive base, right? The point I was trying to emphasize is that in sports like life we should move forward not backwards. The sport is progressing fine. Fighters' health has become more of a priority, and it moved from being a brute force competition to an athletic competition that maintains its brute force roots.

I love that last paragraph. Truly the way things should be. If you don't like a certain style don't order the ppv or don't tune in for the fight. There will still be enough of us that watch, but it'll be an incentive for the to fight the way you like in order to get higher paydays. But it seems that people really do like to watch the style because they like the defensive style or they like *****ing about it. Lol, I have learned late in life that people LOVE to have something to ***** about hahahhhahaaha!!! I guess I'm not too different if I'm being honest, although I do genuinely like the defensive style of boxing, I ***** about other stuff lol.

The TRULY GREAT fighters are SKILLFUL AND BRUTAL.

The truly great fighters avoided blows and launched aggressive attacks.
Sure, they might have to risk taking a few more to land a few more at times, that's just part of the game.

I guiess some "purists" would like to see a defensive master who avoids all blows, throws and land one single punch in the round, and does that for 12 straight rounds. :dead
    12 rounds, 12 thrown, 12 landed.

You make it sound like that was a golden age (and an episode of the Flintstones) where people were sitting down with their families, a brontosaurus burger and watching two men fight to the death.

More like when the Flintstones was first aired, 1960 - 1966
Yeah, whole families did sit down to watch Emile Griffith kill Benny Paret in 1962. Unfortunately.

When the Queensberry rules were created. I wonder did they want to reward running?

Pro boxing is about hurting the other man.

I take no issue with true boxing purists. If that's your thing and you have the knowledge and expertise to back it up, then more power to you. I have an issue with the type of people who worship Floyd as a practitioner of the 'sweet science' and then turn around and tell you they think DSG beat Lamont and Canelo beat Lara. That reeks of fanboyism rather than any deep understanding of what it takes to be an artful boxer.

    Not at all.

Mayweather is a master, and Lara isnt even a cheap imitation.

I did have canelo barely edging lara, or would be fine with a draw. It cracks me up that people try comparing their fights with canelo, they are non comparable.

    just imo though
