Its a big problem for me. I'm orthodox.

    Best way out?

Check left hook and move: works well but usually when im backing up the other guy is flurrying so I'm likely to be caught with a straight right and this leaves me quite open.

Jab and move: This works well but often the jab doesn't create enough of an opening.

Duck and move out: A lot of guys do this but I'm tall and skinny so ducking isn't great for me

Backing up in a straight line is not necessarily a nightmare move... Lots of trainers will advise against it, but if you stagger your movement, feint and shift weight, you can do it quite safely. It's all mimickry, as in, pretending to move when really you go the other way. Works the same from side to side.

I agree, Ali did it wonderfully, but it definitely gets me into trouble! :good

Indeed he did. You know what one of his best moves was? Right hand lead. It is a very, very specific technique in my book, shifting the weight backwards while the right hand pops forward. I love the style of that punch, hard to master though.

I throw the right hand lead while moving back as a counter to orthodox left hook/jab....:think.....I always look for it so I think it makes me move backwards a bit...I love that punch though! :good
