Both instances in the Whitaker fight are great examples of blown calls; one was a knockdown, the other a trip. Always felt Pernell should have lost twice against Rivera. This must not have registered all those years ago. That was a knockdown.
Here is one for you - and amazingly another Pernell Whitaker fight - Pea's fight with Alfredo Layne. This occurs at 8:27 which I believe is the beginning of the 10th round. Layne catches him with a left hook to the temple and down he goes. When I first heard there was some controversy about this I noticed even Whitaker appeared to stay down like he was prepared to take a count, but actually he had his wits about him and I think he was just trying to protect himself as Layne was right over him. But it is about 13 seconds that pass before the announcers say, "Something just happened." Because they were listening to the corner between rounds while the action was going on. There is a lot to review in these few seconds. Needless to say referee Al Rothenburg - Whitaker's hand-picked referee that he carried with him everywhere like small change - called it no-knockdown. But I'd love to hear the take on it from you guys. I say a solid knockdown This content is protected
With all due respect, when I originally saw the bout in May 1976, on The CBS Sports Spectacular, I ruled it a slip, he was off balance. Lou Bizarro did not have the punching power of Esteban De Jesus, Lou appeared to be running for dear life throughout the bout. Even a photo with Bizarro grasping Roberto Duran's leg made sports photo of the year, he looked severely battered.
Oh! Oh! I've got one nobody has mentioned.... drum roll.... Ali-Liston II !!! Walcott sure blew that one. (Too obvious? )
