hey ive gotten into boxing about two three months ago although everyone advised me not to cos i haver bad eyesight and weak retinae which put me at risk of going partially blind, leonard-langford-greb style. can anyone give me some counsel on how to defend one's eyes more aggressively then say the ribs or liver? this is also a greater problem for me cos i like in-fighting and boxing would totally lose its charm to me if i would have to butterfly around like ali.
I don't the issue here is boxing with poor vision, it's a risk of blindness. I dunno bud, I love boxing, and I'd hate to give it up, but if I was at risk of going blind, to be honest, I'd probably find another sport. Who is this everyone who advised you? Doctors? I have poor vision and box with contacts in, but nobody ever warned me I'd go blind if I get hit..
yeah but all the eye doctors i went to had contradictory advice, one said i should even play football, others said i was at no greater risk than anyone else and about boxing with poor vision, wolud anyone have any more advice on that? i know when i spar or train its not a big problem but i was wondering how it is in a real fight but hey , a life lived in fear is a life half lived right?
i do see your point about living in fear. But its not just about poor vision i have crap vision i know alot of boxers who get on fine with rubbish eye sight at the end of the day the opponent isnt exactly far away! However what your saying is you have week retina which is different there is a risk of going completely blind. The risk is greater with boxing than football ( for obvious reasons). At the end of the day you can only take the advice your given and then you personally decide weather you want to take the risk. I really feel for you mate crap situation to be in!
What is the medical like for amatuer boxing..???? How good does your eyesight have to be, i honestly think ive got computer eye strain. "Because i spend allot of time on the computer"
I wouldn't risk the blindness. Now for normal poor eyesite it isn't much of a big deal. The ability to detect movement is whats key and that doens't require the perfect clarity of a hawks eyes. You can have superior eyesight like say 20/15 and be poor at detecting movement. At the same time you can have bad eyesight and be quite good at detecting movement. Its really a mental processing thing and rather a function of our primitive brain as opposed ot your eyes. This content is protected
My eyesight is crap, -3.75 in one eye and -4.25 in the other. I just box with my contacts in. I've lost a contact once, no big deal at all. It's the retina thing that should worry you bro, not the poor vision.
You'll be alright, I have a -9.00 power. Keep your chin down and your hands up and you should be fine
Where do you live? Go to a proper eye specialist i.e. a top expert in the USA or Harley Street in London, and get a definitive answer. It might cost you a few hundred but it's better than risking permanent blindness. Never use mickey mouse doctors for critical things like this, healthcare is like anything, you get what you pay for.
I wear my contacts in the ring, so not too bad. But I do seem to always lose atleast 1 in a match or sparring
hey thanks for your advice guys i guess i'll just stop if i see floaters or **** leonard got that problem, got operated and even continued boxing afterward so i guess its not a big deal
Yeah it's risky if your eyeball is miopic as theres already added pressure/strain on your retina. All it takes it a jab to the eyeball(which happens) and that tissue can tear.
