Some seem to believe that Futch erred in stopping Frazier coming out for round 15 in Manila. I personally don’t and never have. Imo, whatever was actually said, overheard or claimed, there was no way Ali wasn’t coming out for the 15th round - and there are plenty of proofs otherwise during his career to support that belief.
Yes, whether one believes Norton needed the 15th round to win (I don’t) or not, his election not to go all out in the final round was more than bemusing. First, the corner and Norton surely should’ve considered the “Ali” scoring factor - meaning, fight as if you’re already 2 rounds behind before opening bell in anticipation of a good degree of bias being exercised in the scoring. Ali was well liked in general and was also still considered boxing’s most valuable asset - deteriorations notwithstanding. Second, when was there any hint of Ali stopping/KO’ing Norton in ALL the previous rounds they fought? I don’t think there was any. Ken should’ve just gone balls to the wall - worse case scenario within reasonable thinking would be he loses the round - which he did anyway by not pressing as hard as he should have.
Just a friendly reminder, Rocky throwing in the towel wouldn't have helped. The ref had tried to step in moments before and Drago threw him aside. Should have been an automatic DQ. Drago wasn't going to stop throwing leather until Creed was on the mat, towel and ref be damned.
It's like a seasoned marathon runner collapsing after the line. If the line was extended another 2000 metres, they'd continue running as though the body is weak, the mind is fully fixed on completing the task. The quit only comes when they know they've conquered what they set out to do. If Frazier comes out, Ali gets up and probably stops him.
Touché. Didn't think of that. Balboa didn't even want him to take the fight. Shouldn't have let him come out for the second round then. Either way, Balboa's got blood on his hands for letting the King of Sting fight a game he couldn't win. The irony of boasting about retiring more men than social security and then ... Damn, rest in peace, Apollo Creed - main weakness, predators and Swedish Russians that were on juice, with bad intentions.
I seem to recall Vitali Klitschko’s cutman using a towel to wipe blood away and ending up tearing open Vitali’s eye wound even further in the Lewis fight.
Look at Cotto's face in fight 1 Margarito had started kicking ass in fight 2 Cotto's face was getting messed up again. Cotto was ready to quit AGAIN !! Look at Cotto's face after Pac beat on it, he cut up bad. Look at Marg's eye after Pac permanently damaged it. Does that mean all those fights included loaded gloves??? No!! all that was started by Floyd, Oscar etc as excuses why they wouldn't fight Margarito. Really Tony's career was tarnished badly by the CSAC's actions. After a nearly 3 year lay off from that he wasn't the same fighter that fought Pac his smashed orbital socket finished him. I still believe that a Margarito at 100% would kick Floyds ass & so does Floyd if he was honest
Check out the first fight between Koichi Wajima and Oscar Albarado sometime. At the start of the 15th round, Wajima had two eyes swollen shut and bleeding from the ear and nose. He shouldn't have been allowed out for the last round. Yet, it took 3 severe knockdowns before the referee finally called it off, not the corner. Very brave cornermen.
"I was present". LOL! Just because you were sitting in the nose bleeds in the arena that held the back room where Margarito was wrapping his hands with plaster of Paris doesn't mean anything.
When saw the question that's what first came to mind. I will never understand how he was let out for that last round. Easy for me to say but there's no way he should have been let out. The ref should have called it too.
Al Weill getting everyone into a panic[,including Goldman,] in the 1st Walcott fight when Rocky came back to his corner and stated he couldn't see,It took Freddie 2 rounds of applying cold wet tissues to the eyes to resolve the problem.Don Turner convincing Holyfield ,"cut men " were a "con and a waste of money." Then seconding Evander in a fight in which he sustained a cut and Turner could not stop the blood from flowing.
I recall when Rafael ruelas was fighting a dude named Mauro Gutierrez. It appeared routine but in the 2nd, ruelas was caught by a sweet combo and went down. He wS OK but was instructed by Joe goosen to take the count. But instead of looking/listening to the ref, Goosen is applying his own count and Ruelas is listening to him. The problem with this was that goosen is one second behind the referee's count. While the ref is saying 6, goosen is saying 5. At 10 Goosen hadn't caught up and was telling Ruelas 9 and was counted out while Joe was motioning to Rafael to get up. Next time, Joe, tell your charge to listen to the ref.
It’s wild watching that fights, I don’t know how much it is the corner when you hear Foreman’s own thoughts on the fight- but Ali certainly didn’t go to the edge in that fight. He sparred Foreman really, absolutely schooled him with how savvy he was. The event changes the story but on film you can see a raw character in with someone who knows how to really fight . No version of 70s Foreman was intelligent enough for Muhammad IMO.
