It's often exaggerated how dirty Marco Antonio Barrera is. In reality, he always liked to try and get a shot in just before the referee would break up a clinch. He was doing that way before Erik Morales and Manny Pacquiao. Likewise, Hamed was the one who had Marco in a headlock early on in the fight. The Marquez and Pacquiao situations I can't explain however, it's a good job his skills, talent, and overall legacy far overshadow his lowest moments.
barrera was a real fighter... He came from a wealthy family and didnt need to box, and always wanted to hurt his opponent as much as possible :yep
With JMM, Jay Nady was VERY slow in getting to a downed Marquez, JMM wasn't all the way down, and I think it was just a heat of the moment thing, not much different from the extra little shot Pac landed on JMM in their first fight, I think on the third KD. With the shot on Pac, if you watch it in real time, you can see that the ref just came up and weakly inserted a hand between them instead of getting his body in there, MAB's head was turned away and he didn't even see the ref until his body turned with the right hand. I doubt very much he felt the ref's hand coming in between them either. It's reffing 101 - when you break up two fighters you get in between them, you don't just stick a hand in, and you don't just grab one fighter and not the other.
I remember in the Robbie Peden fight, Peden kept on hitting Barrera on the break... by the later rounds Barrera began to retaliate by drilling Peden with a sledgehammer right during every break. Barrera is one mean little ****er.
I love the guy. I really hope to meet him one day. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9vbvGLNMOw&feature=PlayList&p=86087F529C254679&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=12[/ame]
Peden is lucky Barrera stuck to a tactical gameplan in that fight. If MAB had fought like that throughout the entire bout Peden would've been laid out flat on the canvas.
i remember as the referee intervened barrera threw a short punch which wasn't even harder than his regular jab. Pac went to the corner hanging on the ropes like he got punched by tyson lol.
What in the hell was MAB thinking punching JMM when he was down.... i cant remember if JMM got any extra time for that but that could have really changed things, and regardless if it didnt, that was just completely stupid.
This is what I admired most. Not many fighters at his level came from other than a rough upbringing. But I think his motivation had more to do with the desire to utterly dominate and intimidate his opponent, than any wish to do dire physical damage. If such occurred en route, so be it, but the prime mover was to leave no doubt as to whom was el jefe. Of course this is pure speculation...
