At nearly 40, Badou Jack is attempting to win a title in his third division today against the defending WBC champ Makabu. Honestly, Jack hasn't looked like a top fighter in years. But, regardless of the outcome, the guy has had one hell of a career and left whole pieces of himself in the ring. The first time I really remember seeing him fight was actually his humiliating, one-round KO loss on ShoBox. At the time, I just figured he was simply another overhyped boxer who was exposed and would fade away. He turned out to be one of my favorite fighters to watch for nearly a decade because he was both exciting and extremely vulnerable. Most of his significant fights seesawed back and forth. Most went down to the wire. As a result, he was an excellent "TV Fighter" as they used to say. Viewers stayed tuned to the very end because the result was usually in doubt. Jack probably shouldn't be fighting anymore. But, as always, I wish him the best today. Good fighter, took on everyone he could. Hope he loses today without getting hurt but also sufficiently to compel him to retire. He needs to hang it up.
If you told me the night of the loss to Edwards that he was going to have such an interesting career and longevity I'd have probably dismissed the idea. That night he seemed yet another run-of-the-mill flash-in-the-pan hyped prospect that would disappear after being exposed.
Badou Jack has been my "guilty pleasure" fighter to root for over the years, in that he's not super-elite, his style isn't super-exciting (although he has been in a few great fights), but I just like the guy regardless. Sadly I think Makabu beats him and it won't be competitive. Hope I'm wrong.
Yeah I'm a fan he's got that workhorse style and engine and has been on the bad side of some questionable decisions I thought he beat DeGale and while I think a draw is fair for the Stevenson fight I also think had he in gotten the nod in those 2 his resume starts looking a little more impressive to the boxrec reader.
