    Folks,

I got my tapes out tonight and I found my '33 classic with Max Baer fighting Max Schmeling up in New York.

Max Baer is obviously the bigger man by far but, as I see it, Max Schmeling is the superior boxer all the way.. Still, in the end, it didn't matter.. Power prevailed...

Right from the getgo, Baer came out winging his typical crazy shots at Schmeling. Some landed; others missed.. As far as styles meshing, well yes, this was a beauty in my book...

All in all, a great fight with Max Baer eventually breaking down Max Schmeling and scoring the TKO in round 10 to seal the deal shut....

Max Schmeling was in the fight all the way, but he just got clocked hard by Baer in round 10 and was unable to recover.... Ref stops the fight with Schmeling upright against the ropes on ***** street.....

This is a great fight. One of my favs. Schmeling was in it until the end. Baer himself said that Schmeling had him badly hurt once and he was lucky that Schmeling didn´t recognize it.

Baer just got off to a better start early on, but was no way the better fighter. If these two (Baer-Schmeling) were able to fight a three-part series, I'd bet Max Schmeling would win at least once. Again, Baer very big, strong and powerful, but also sloppy. Max Schmeling was the superior boxer in the ring.. However, he got caught badly by Baer in round 10...

That was Baer´s best performance too, with the destruction of Carnera, with him beeing hot and cold despite this fight I´d take Schmeling to come out on top in a three fight series.

I still freak when I think back and realize Baer died at age 50 in 1959 from a heart attack..... What happened? I know he put on weight as he aged, but that is natural all over the globe...... He must've had some form of blockage from eating too much bacon and eggs with butter, etc.....?

That did in my grandad in 1975 at age 56........ He loved bacon, eggs, coffee and Pall Mall cigs at breakfast each day..... 10 days before Christmas '75, he dropped in the living room dead as a door-nail...... JESUS!!

Baer looked pretty good in there, he was no boxer but he covered up well in this fight, and he threw some great SHORT punches.

Schmeling may have been "in the fight" all the way, but Baer was even more so ! Baer's punches were landing often and hurting Max every time they did.

I cant give Schmeling credit for winning some sort of hypotheical series between the two. I'm not sure Schmeling had the right style.
Besides, when the smoke had cleared, Baer had almost killed him.

Schmeling was one tough dude though. Fighters in those days were true gladiators.

I dont know, but Max Baer lived more in his 50 years than most people could hope for in 100 !

One of the greatest characters boxing ever had, and a success story after boxing with his acting.

(I haven't seen the Ron Howard character assassination on Max but it's shameful that Hollywood sanctions such crap, about a man whom Americans should remain fond of.)

No, Baer was not hurting Schmeling with every punch he landed. And no, I don´t give anybody credit for hypothetical fights. I just added a thought on this matter taking some facts about Baer into account.

    Fair enough.
Schmeling actually described himself as being "outclassed" by Baer in the fight. And he was getting clouted pretty hard in every round, if not every punch.

Shame they didn't fight again. There was talk of a match in 1934 or 1935 for the championship, and was plans to rematch them in London in 1938 but it didn't come off.

Great win for Baer, especially considering Schmeling was a heavy betting favourite going in.

I would have been rather interested to see a rematch between these two.

One of the classics of that era that never was.

Notice after Baer hurt Schmeling along the ropes in round 10, Baer missed with one haymaker but came back with his famous illegal back hand swing..... Baer, like George Foreman, threw some funny / crazy shots when all jazzed up and looking to kill.....

I had Baer ahead going in the tenth, I think by 2 rounds when I scored it lol.

I think Schmeling would win a rematch. He just got caught in the tenth round which happens. Before that, he was doing pretty good. It was not the beat down Kings of the Ring or other docs like claim it was, it was a close fight until the tenth round.

The problem I saw for Schmeling was that he couldn't hurt Baer. His style pretty much relied on him being able to hurt his opponents with the right hand. On some nights, Schmeling could outpoint Baer who tended to coast in his fights, but the combination of size, strength and durability of Baer would always present difficulties for Schmeling.

Good point. I only really saw Max Baer ever hurt was in his '35 fight with Joe Louis.. Baer pinned and had Louis going with some vicious shots, but Louis turned-it-around and nailed Baer with some wicked return leather.... Of course Louis gets the stoppage in the end..... Great fight..

I never saw Baer's losses to Louie Nova later on around 1940 / '41...... I'm not sure if Nova really hurt Baer or just diced him up good.?.?

Baer walked through a ton of punishment and got butchered by Nova until the referee decided to stop it with Baer still on his feet.

In the second fight, Baer was washed up and took a beating until being knocked down twice. He wasn't legitimately knocked out, but he had seen enough.
