Baer V Berbick ?

I think it's more a matter of folks around here not rating Baer particularly highly*.


*If Mongoose/Kentucky Cobra were still around, he'd certainly have something to say about that.

 

Max Baer was 210+ so he wouldn't be conceding a lot of size.

 

Max Baer was 210+ at 6'2. He wouldn't be giving up any great deal of size to Berbick, at best 10 pounds. Also Carnera was the size of Lennox Lewis, maybe slightly bigger. True, not as good as Lewis, but my point is, Carnera was a significantly larger man than Berbick so I don't think Baer being too small factors in.

And, it depends on the 2 fighters in question. Especially when you get north of 175-180 pounds. Size still factors in, but for whatever reason, it's not as much of a factor as it is below that weight. When you get to 200+ it's even less of a factor. I'd pick Max Schmeling or Floyd Patterson over Trevor Berbick, at least more often than not and both were under 200 pounds.

 

He had an weight advantage over most of his opponents, but fought some 200+ I think he lacks some technique, is basically limited to hang in, rush for a brawl and rush out again. Rince and repeat, no jab etc. In my opinion it is not enough for modern heavys.

I'd still favor Max but Berbick would have a decent shot here.

 

Max, in my opinion would bust up Berbick, I can't see anyway Berbick could win

 

Max IMO, was they type of fighter who could win fights off of durability and punching power alone, depending on who he was fighting. In this case, it might be enough for a Berbick or a Weaver. Against a prime Tyson or Lennox Lewis? Not at all.

 

And what does your power mean in a world of 190lb pounders when youre 210? Nobody gets your respect and you can finish your described power-chin-and-nothing-else-gameplan. We´ve seen what happened when he tryed to impose his power on Louis who didn´t get hurt and seconds later brawled back --> Baer was finished, he did nothing more. Alot of fighters gave Louis a better fight. Now I don´t know about Max condition in there, but he looked limited in other fights too.
The other question is Berbicks chin. What happened with KO1 in his youth? He didn´t fall anymore after Tyson and looked durable vs Rahman. Does he get sold below here because of the Tyson massacre?

 

Well he hit hard enough to bounce SHW Carnera up, down and around the canvas. Carnera may have not been the best big man to ever do it, but he was a big man and I don't understand what the difference is between the average big man of today and the average big man of yesteryear. If we knew nothing of Carnera and he was brought to 2018 and made an AJ or Wilder opponent and they stopped the 6'7 260 pound Carnera and bounced him around like Max Baer did, it would be used as just one more piece of evidence of their tremendous punching power. Especially if Carnera was in the top 10.
