A focus Lewis has too many skills for Baer. However if Lewis has a off night like against Rahman and McCall then another upset is possible with Baer hammer like right hand.
I'd say there's about an 80% chance Lewis wins if he's careful -but he'd better be. If he's not Baer could clean his clock as least as badly as Rahman or McCall.
Lewis needs to bring his A game and out box Baer, avoiding exchanges and defensive lapses. Baer was excellent at bombing over lazy jabs. The 15 rounds....favors Baer. I dont know how Lewis holds up under those conditions. Baer was a fantastic athlete with great stamina, who carried his power late. Lewis often looked winded in even 12 rounders. 12 rounds, Lewis wins 2 out of 3. 15....not so sure.
Lewis is the heavy favorite here. But what makes this fight interesting is that Max Baer likely had the artillery to take Lewis out and cause a massive upset. There are more technically sound heavy punchers than Max Baer, who while not as good as Lewis were better than Baer, but yet I'd still pick a focused Max Baer to beat them. Fighters like Cleveland Williams or MIke Weaver come to mind. That's principally because of their limited chins which would sooner or later betray them against Max Baer. Lewis was even superior to Williams and Weaver and much less likely by a considerable amount to be caught by Max Baer. The most likely scenario is Lewis battering Max Baer in a very one sided massacre. But lest Lewis get too happy and leave himself open then we could see another upset.
Lewis is faster, stronger, bigger puncher and had better ring iq and huge....What does Baer do better ? Clown about ? I can see its going to be a slow process educating you fella, but i'm game, so its all good !
What of it? Bear was durable. Lewis never knocked out a durable fighter outside of cutting Vitali. McCall, Tua, Holyfield, Tucker, Mavrovic, Mercer...etc. Lewis scored most of his early KOs against more fragile types, I can't see him jumping on Baer early and any good coming of it. Kind of a weird reasoning there, Rahman didn't do anything better than Lewis...he still beat him. Baer is probably a little faster than Lewis overall, especially on his feet. Baer works the body better than Lewis Baer is likely more durable, better stamina, and far more proven over 15 rounds. I certainly favor Lewis to outbox 2 times out of 3 in a 12 round affair.
I was joking bout the size difference even though its a factor. I just thought it might of been the straw that broke the camels back from the Bruno thread and you would flip lol...Now in this case imo, there is an opening for Baer how ever little it was with his big right to cause an upset. But I do feel its a small chance. Lewis was on it v big punchers and took them out sharpish
This is a myth actually. The fights cited are Ruddock, Golota, and Grant. Ruddock was the aggressor against Lewis but he walked into a heck of a right hand early and Lewis finished the job. Lewis was actually aggressive against Golota, but he was hardly known as a big puncher and was fighting poorly when Lewis jumped him. Grant really not a big puncher, and Lewis was at a size disadvantage that forced him to fight on the inside. I would also throw in the Vitali fight where Lewis was also at size disadvantage and had to step into his punches and be the aggressor. Some might throw in Briggs, but Briggs jumped him until he gassed. I would propose Tyson, Tua, Rahman II, Morrison, McCall II, Mercer, and even Holyfield as far more common examples of Lewis taking his time and boxing fighters whom he respected their punch.
Though a far lesser fighter than Lewis, the smaller, less skilled Baer has the same puncher’s chance as any number of other crude heavyweights with big rights. Most likely scenario is that Lewis patiently batters and dismantles him.
I can't see anything good coming out of this for Baer. Sluggers like Mercer that gave Lewis problems look like technical wizards next to Baer. Baer's best chances would come if Lewis looked at this relative midget and took him lightly while Baer came in fired up and ready to go. Lewis really did look crappy in his stinky performances and Baer could hit like a truck if nothing else. I guess it's possible that Max could find the punch to make Lewis relive the Rahman experience. However, I also want to add that Baer himself was like Lewis in that he could turn in a god-awful performance if the mood struck him. If Lewis came in fired up and Baer decided to flex his pecs all night, they'd need a stiff wooden stretcher with a lid and flowers on it for Baer.
Rachman was a 100% a stronger guy than Lewis, his core strength was serious. Ruddock was a tough fighter went 12 in a war with Tyson. Don't tell me, Tyson softened him up yeah ?
