Which is one of the reasons i lean toward Earnie. You've actually hobbled your own argument somewhat. You've openly implied that Max has a bit of quit in him.......and that Earnie doesn't. Max himself said he pulled the pin. How will he feel when Earnie lands some of the heaviest punches ever thrown in the ring? Shavers is sure going to hit him as Baer's skill level was really quit ordinary. When push comes to shove it might come down to who wants it more and truth be told Max's heart was never fully in boxing.
The Acorn isn't too bad when he has his mind on the job. His approach and performance vs Ali was excellent. Louis did indeed have Max looking for the exit.
Earnie Shavers: Power: 10 Defense: 5 Hand speed: 6 Chin: 6 Stamina: 6 Foot speed: 5 Combination punching: 6 Punch variety: 7 Physical strength: 7 Technique: 5 Ring IQ: 3 Accuracy: 4 Heart: 5 overall rating: 5.8 Max Baer Power: 9 Defense: 4 Hand speed: 6 Chin: 8 Stamina: 7 Foot speed: 5 Combination punching: 4 Punch variety: 5 Physical strength: 7 Technique: 4 Ring IQ: 2 Accuracy: 5 Heart: 6 Overall rating: 5.5 Close fight on paper, but both are sluggers with tremendous power and very leaky defense. Baer is more durable with slightly better stamina, but that's it. Shavers is slightly smarter and the overall better operator with superior combination punching, variety in his approach, and technique. Baer didn't jab enough a d mostly relied on one big right hand while Shavers had more tools such as a powerful hook and uppercut. Shavers even once outboxed a guy with his jab when he hurt his hand. So basically, I think as long as Shavers doesn't blow through his gas tank early and doesn't get nailed by too many big bombs, he should take this. Those are big ifs though. Baer, as I mentioned, is the more durable and reliable guy in a slug fest so hsi best chances would be to make it as ugly and wild as possible and drag shavers into deep waters. Bears lack of defense may nullify his advantage in endurance however, he was so hittable and goofed off a lot. I favor Shavers 6/10, probably by KO within 5-7 rounds in a forest fire of a fight.
You're right. That was just a typo on my part. In and at, night and time, those words are very easy to confuse.
If you're siding with chok you're 90% beaten already! It's an open affair but the more i think about it the better Shavers chances get for reasons I've already stated. Baer didn't even possess a jab which is commonly the most important punch in boxing. Not possessing a jab also takes away the most effective camouflage for a right hand. Almost every great right hand bomber in history worked it at least decently off the jab, certainly outside fighters. Even more boxer orientated types like Ali and Holmes leant heavily on their great jabs to set up searing right hands. It's boxing 101. Even a shorter swarming type like Tyson popped the odd ramrod jab. Hearns was otherworldly at it etc
Both of these men can land punches that would bring down the walls of Jericho, but only one of them could take a punch. I would have to make Baer the favorite, with the usual caveat that he might find some creative way to f*** up.
Not convinced with this spread sheet analysis. I think they used your system for the Ali vs Marciano computer fight.
Clarence Williams III, the dude from Mod Squad - king of head 2 head…Afros? He was definitely king of that hirsute domain.
Not that the said ratings aren’t necessarily justified, but I did note that Earnie and Max’s combined Ring IQ = 5/10. Whoa! That’s borderline stuff.
I favor Baer as well but in defense of Shavers, his chin seemed solid. He took solid punches from Lyle and seemed unphased up until he gassed out. Only time his chin (rather than his endurance) actually let him down was against Quarry when he was hit with 30 or so unanswered power punches.
