how and why are bag gloves different from normal gloves? Are there even 'normal gloves'? I hear people going on about sparring gloves, bag gloves, fighting gloves, etc. I don't get the point, I have one pair that I use for everything.

Bag gloves have stiffer more durable less forgiving foam. Training gloves are usually 2 oz heavier than the bag gloves (14-16oz) and softer. You can use both for either purpose, much like you could cut butter with a hacksaw.

People use two sets of gloves for specific reasons:

-- Hygiene - Heavy Bags are disgusting. When is the last time you saw gym staff washing the ones at your gym? Next time you are sparring and get a thumb or glove surface in your eye or a split lip? Think about rubbing an open wound on that filthy bag surface.

-- Safety - Over time padding compresses. If you are using training gloves on the bag? Fine. It is your knuckles. If you are using training gloves on the bag then on your gym partners? You run the risk of emptying your gym of quality workmates. The point of sparring is to WORK not win. Why would you want to risk gloves so compressed that guys either quit or are injured?

I understand Boxing is "a poor man's sport", but if you only have one pair of gloves? I hope that you are at least giving them a good wipe down daily and/or before sparring. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Bag gloves - firmer padding, made for protecting your hand when hitting bags/pads

Sparring gloves - softer padding, made for protecting your sparring partners face

Training gloves - in between padding. Used for both.

Fight gloves - 8 or 10 ounces if they're pro fight gloves, 10 or 12 if they're amateur. Hardest padding (especiall pro fight gloves). Less durable, made for competition.

I just have 12 oz fake adidas gloves.
And I'm a missionary's kid in a third world country so yeah, already I could hardly afford the mouthpiece, so three pairs of gloves, not really haha.
Can't complain though, I'm just fine
