    Hi all,

Wondering if you all could offer some thoughts on this video of my bag work. Been training for about a year and a half. Sparred some (maybe a dozen times) and have a lot of hours hitting the mitts/bag.

There's four 2 minute rounds. Go ahead and skip ahead during the one minute breaks unless you wanna watch the bag swinging. Two of the rounds (1,4) are pretty much strictly 1-2 combinations, where I'm working on bouncing in and out. The third round is some inside work and the last round is all straight rights with a few left hooks. Sorry for when my back is to the camera-- I just completely forgot to pay attention to my body positioning, lol.

It looks like I'm a southpaw for some reason but I'm orthodox.

    Thanks for your time.

When you step with your jab, you don't bring your right foot up so your weight ends up on your left foot and you reach with your right hand. Try pushing off the right foot to move closer, then bringing it up as you move.

notice how the bag is flying around the room and you have to stop several times to reposition it, you dont want that... instead try and snap your punches when u hit the bag instead of hitting it hard with every shot and if it does happen to get out of control like that use a jab to slow it down and reposition it...

Very good point. That bag swinging is how you learn to move around an opponent- and you control it with your jab and your feet. When you start learning how to get close and work, that swinging bag is how you learn to deal with a body up close.
That bag swinging is also how you learn to time your punches- to 'catch him coming in' and thus magnify the power of your punches.
The "snap" in your punches will come from the violence of the motion in your hips and will increase the concussive force of your punches.

This confused me too at first. I'm guessing the image is simply reversed, like a mirror image?
(the Everlast logo wording is backwards, so that's my guess).

That's correct. Sorry, reading my post now I realize my phrasing could be confusing.

Just go to the boxing gym and work with somebody who knows the fundamentals and can correct the mistakes. Rarely will anybody improve by getting advice over an internet forum.

You need to strengthen your jab and focus more on the many different ways you can use it before even trying a 1-2 combination. You also have little head movement or upper body movement seems your too eager to hit the bag. Just relax, warm-up and stretch for a good 10 minutes at least from your neck to your toes, shadow box with those 1-2 lbs aerobic weights while moving around the ring for 3 3 minute rnds, then another 3 rnds without weights, THEN you can move on to the heavy bag. It's important your body is a properly oiled machine and you get a sweat and blood pumping so you won't be out of breath and prevent injuries.

Concerning your heavybag work, you don't have to overkill yourself bouncing around so much. Just keep your chin tucked, earmuffs on, eyes on your opponent, bag in this case, and always your legs alil bent so you'll be ready to spring laterally or bob and weave. Jab to the body it's just as important as the head. You COULD be hitting harder, but because your bouncing too much you're not planting your feet. Also by rotating your waist more and planting your feet will help you land with more power, just don't reach in so much. Find your range. You need to remember when you're hitting the bag just because it's not hitting you back that doesn't mean you can disregard defense like that. You have good speed, just instead of 2min rnds do 3min rnds just slowdown, time your punches to where you are confident enough your shots are landing crisp and your not losing your balance. Right now just focus punching AT your target, later you can focus punching THROUGH your target. You can whipout the jab like a whip or put your weight behind it, sometimes even dropping them, trick is to confuse your opponent. So work on your jab like a mofuka by mixing it up to head and body, double it, even triple it, keep your trigger hand ****ed, but high, just never stay in the same place or jab in a straight line like Manny did to Jmm. Lol You jab using lateral movement, like Ali and Bhops did it for ex. Hopkins had some great vids on technique I highly recommend you givem a look. Work on technique first before speed and power. Godspeed.
