They're been trying to get rid of the word "amateur' for quite a while but its just stuck.

I mean, the WSB is BLATANTLY not amateur, its literally people fighting for money, with no vests in 5 round fights.

There was even that APB thing going for a while which even has Professional in the title.

Its a bit of a mess.

There isn't even the old differences of headgear and points scoring

Better competition as an amateur. What’s the point of knocking over cans to build a profile? Maybe he likes the sport.
Why didn’t 6’7, 15-0 pro Modungo focus on his pro career instead of getting stopped by a body shot by amateur Usyk in the second round of a WSB contest?
Are people only discovering now that pros have been allowed to compete as amateurs? How did they go at the 2016 Olympics?
It’s only coming to notice now because that US boxer got knocked out.

That’s because Torres is small, and not very good.

Words are used in context. Every top amateur gets an income to train full time, and their schedule/training is as professional as it gets. A garbage truck driver can pass a medical and get on a ‘pro’ card.
Look at how 15-0 ‘pro’ Modungo went against amateur Usyk and tell me who looks more professional.

I think he’s very one dimensional. Look out for Huni in the future, he was the talent at these worlds.

Yes you can! None of the pros got past the round of 16 at the 2016 Olympics. The top amateurs are more professional in every sense of the word than most ‘pro’ fighters.

Then why npot just call them pros?

Is amateur now simply to imply a certain section of boxing?

"Amateur" is simply a term left over from the past era.

The term amateur should not be used for any of these guys.

The AIBA are simply another pro boxing organisation...they're essentially now another sanctioning body.

Alright, a sanctioning body that enforces the best to fight the best in tournaments. Great.

You can call it what you want. Professional wrestling isn’t the sport, the same way that professional boxing isn’t the sport. At the Olympic level you have the athletes competing with intrinsic motivation against the best in the world.

Except it isnt the best fighting the best, because the best are making far better money fighting in the traditional pro ranks.

Despite its professional nature, its still basically the college basketball equivalent to "professional" boxings NFL, with a few anomalies.

Well it's a completely different thing... Amateurs are preparing for less rounds while the pro boxers are often training to be on the ring for 12.

You don’t understand what the pro or amateur game is.
In the ‘pro’ game the titles are divided, divas make demands, soft touches are taken, the top names pick and choose who and when they fight. The best tend to go out of their way to avoid the best, so they can retain their status and make hype and money with ‘professional wrestling’ antics. Then there’s network and promoter conflicts. Then there’s fighters who refuse to travel. Plus the fact that the top talents often don’t even join the pro game. The ‘pro’ game is an absolute joke, it’s barely a sport. I mean a garbage truck driver can pass a medical and have a pro fight. You don’t need talent or experience to turn pro. Is that the same as other sports?

Contrast that to the ‘amateur’ game, where the best are forced to fight the best from all over the world. Where every fighter is fine tuning their skills in the pursuit of mastery and glory for themselves and for their country. Where you need to earn your spot every step of the way, prove yourself repeatedly over tournaments. I could go on, but you get the picture.

The "best" amateurs fight the "best amateurs...sure.

They're not the best fighters though, because the best amateurs go pro and advance their ability into fighting over 12 rounds

You mean they pace themselves over 12, fight worse opposition. You’re stuck on the word amateur and you don’t know the sport. You don’t understand and that’s cool, but I’ve had enough of you.
