My perception whenever Martin is debated here is that folk are quick to put the blame for any shortcoming on Billy Nelson, but there's limits to what a trainer can do. He can't police everything that Bakole eats or drinks, he can set targets but conditioning is ultimately down to the fighter themself. I hope Bakole can get back on track, there's big money to be earned in that division if he maximises his potential.
Was the decision to take the Parker fight on 24 hr's notice the correct one ? Hearn said this when he and Billy got into it on social media over Martin : This content is protected Billy replied : This content is protected How much did he get paid ?
It was definitely the right decision to take the Parker fight because it didn’t affect the Ajagba fight. And Billy did his job well by stopping the fight when Bakole was hurt. It was the right decision, easy money for little work but it rubber stamps just how pathetic Bakole’s attitude to training is because he may have had a chance to win that fight if he was in shape. Imagine he stayed in shape, beat Parker and then Ajagba. He’d be the hottest property in HW boxing in an instant. Turki would have showered him in dough.
It's hard not to agree with this, but I feel Ajaba was robbed in his fight with Martin. Bakole looked utterly out of sorts, and all Billy talk pre-fight was exactly that. Being out of shape is what got him knocked out against Parker, as he took some big shots from Ajagba. Considering Bakole was dripped out in Gucci during fight week, hopefully, he netted seven figures for the Parker fight.
Bakole relinquished his shot at the IBF final eliminator with Ajagba, so I'd argue that the decision to face Parker affected the Ajagba fight considerably, rightly or wrongly. Billy Nelson talks shite. He said in an interview a couple of days before the weigh-in that Martin had lost fifteen kilos or something like that. He'd lost about six. How can a trainer be that far out? It's so basic and it's fundamental. Not very diligent. Bakole looked like a right fat slob again. As soon as I saw him draped in Gucci from head to toe before the Anderson fight I knew the guy had mush for brains and was that kind of guy.
Literally just read your post after I had made my post - both talking about Gucci! Very funny. Good eye. I hadn't noticed it in the lead-up to Ajagba as I didn't watch any of his interviews or the weigh-in etc. I've noticed Sheeraz is like that also.
Surely that is exactly what he should be doing especially in camp for a fight. If he hasn't specifically employed a nutritionist (which he said he has not) then he should take responsibility for Martins diet, police what he is eating and when, getting him out of bed in the morning and taking him home at night to go to sleep. This is world championship boxing at the highest level not charity white collar stuff. Absolute amateur showing from Billy and Martin turning up 300lbs for the most important fight of his career.
That is insulting the many dedicated amateurs who would never be in such a grossly obese condition. It is full Mickey Mouse and that is insulting to poor Mickey.
