Something in me wishes Holyfield would’ve gone for broke with Lennox and been “ballsy and stupid” it worked for Briggs in a moment but EH could’ve taken advantage of many more openings then “Cannon” Shannon.
This is the fight that immediately came to mind Mike. I was about to add exactly what u wrote. You beat me to it....
Conn was dragging his feet at the start of the 13th. Willingly or not, he was getting into an exchange he wasn't walking away from.
Hi Flash. Thanks mate, not often I am in front of a seasoned poster such as yourself ! chat soon buddy.
Ali vs Cooper was ballsy and incredibly stupid. Ali was so in command of the fight that he went for his regular clownish routine, showboating and taunting Cooper. His stupidity earned him a well deserved brutal knock down. In retrospective, that knock down was a blessing in disguise. Ali learned a hard lesson on the limits and risks of showboating.
Muhammad's best strategy against Frazier was employed in their second fight - dancing, moving and clinching. He had n't got his legs back to do it that way in their first fight but should have done it in Manila.
'That wasn't the real Larry Holmes in there. If that was the real Larry Holmes I wouldn't have stood a chance'. Tydon, a huge scholar of the game, after the fight. Rarely had a truer word been spoken!! I remember watching that fight and I'm sure Holmes says to his corner 'big round baby, big round' and goes out and gets up on his toes and jabs Mike's head off for, oh, 30 seconds....big round? But it showed what the real Larry Holmes would likely have done!!
Hard to think of anything more senseless than the Muhammad Ali--Antonio Inoki "exhibition" match. Ali suffered blood clots in his legs and an infection. That could not only have ended his career right then but may have led to a FAR more serious medical situation!! And all for some bizarre spectacle that was ultimately an embarrassment!!
