Keeping him in the middle of the ring and going to the body is much easier said than done. I don't think Cotto wanted to be backed up onto the ropes the whole fight the way he was. It's also very difficult to go to the body against a stronger guy who's throwing a lot of uppercuts.

He has to take measures to slow down Margorito's output. If he can't do that then he will get hurt and wore down. Cotto's reactions to Margarito's punches clearly indicated that they were having an effect, even when they weren't landing cleanly.

Punch output is not the only thing that determines fatigue. Being constantly pressured can do it as well. Fighters who are in a zone and fighting the type of fight they're comfortable fighting will have more energy. I don't think I have to say who was doing what in this fight.

teach him to stay in the center of the ring and punch to the body all the time. if marg keeps his hand low to protect his liver then cotto will punch to the stomach. and i'll bring back the low blow to his arsenal.

work on stamina, train him to fight on the center of the ring, jab, and clinch when close to the ropes.

    1 Stay off the Ropes
2 Fight on the outside and keep pot-shotting with quick combos
3 More focus on body shots to slow Marg down
4 Clich as soon as Marg gets on the inside

Yeah. Watch lots of Bhop fights.. Also 2 well placed low blows would help to sap Margos energy. Maintain those 3-4 punch combos but this time clinch after you deliver those punches and stick your head near his mouth (ala holyfield) to prevent your opponent from punching back. Do this again and again and Margo will quit :)

I would tell him go to the body more which probably makes even more sense than just boxing the guy, because margarito chin is made of steel. A smart strategy against any good chinned fighter such as marg is to attack the body with hopes of wearing him down. I would also try to keep him on the outside and clinch to keep margarito out of his rhythm.

    1. Be aggressive!!
    2. Box in tight circles, by staying in the middle of the ring Cotto has a clear advantage by being able to fight at his distance not Tonys, something I noticed in the first fight was that Tony was never effective when the action was in the middle of the ring.
    3. Don't forget the body!!!!!!!!!! Mix up your punches well
    4. After throwing a combination don't be so quick to pull out(which allows Tony to track you), start jabbing instead, moving, then repeat...
    5. Learn to clinch when stunned or hurt.

Stay in close but circle, dont keep back tracking as it gives Margo space to put leverage on his punches

Throw a combo and then clinch

Clinch and spoil to take breathers and the moment you get even slightly hurt

Body, body, body. Do not even attempt to throw hurtful punches to the face, just scoring punches and put the meat in downstairs

when the ref is on the blind side dig a couple of borderline low blows

Hatton/Tzyu his balls if you get hurt

    Train more for stamina

Do not even consider a knockout, aim for 12 rounds

Do nothing for the first 30 seconds of a round

Make sure all combos come in the last minute of the round

Get your buzzcut in his face any chance you get

It won't be pretty, it certainly won't be the sweet science, but it might get the job done

Mid fight with Mosley, Cotto's style changed to a boxer. Cotto started to believe in his boxing abilities too and that didn't work for Margarito.

That should change, revert back to his brawling/stocking style. Not a step back, always move forward. Push Margo if needed, but always move forward.
