This should be a nice little tournament and we're proud to be a part of it. http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/10371784/two-8-man-boxcino-tournaments-air-friday-night-fights Godspeed Team Rudd!
"...beginning on Feb. 21, ...this is the second time Banner Promotions and ESPN have put on a Boxcino tournament. The first was in 1997, and that tournament produced a major star in Acelino "Popo" Freitas of Brazil, who went on to win world titles at junior lightweight and lightweight and became one of boxing's most significant fighters. The Boxcino lightweight field will include: • Yakubu Amidu (22-4-1, 18 KOs) of Los Angeles • Fernando Carcamo (15-5, 12 KOs) of Mexico • Miguel Gonzalez (22-3, 16 KOs) of Cleveland • Miguel Angel Mendoza (21-2-2, 21 KOs) of Mexico • Samuel Neequaye (21-0, 15 KOs) of Ghana • Fedor Papazov (14-0, 9 KOs) of Russia • Petr Petrov (32-4-2, 15 KOs) of Spain • Chris Rudd (12-1, 8 KOs) of Covington, Tenn. The middleweight competitors will be: • Brandon Adams (12-0, 7 KOs) of San Diego • Sena Agbeko (15-0, 15 KOs) of Ghana • Donatas Bondorovas (18-4-1, 6 KOs) of Chicago • Daniel Edouard (23-4-2, 12 KOs) of West Palm Beach, Fla. • Cerresso Fort (17-2-1, 11 KOs) of St. Paul, Minn. • Raymond Gatica (13-1, 7 KOs) of Austin, Texas • Willie Monroe Jr. (15-1, 6 KOs) of Rochester, N.Y. • Vitalii Kopylenko (22-0, 12 KOs) of Ukraine." That is pretty cool. A nice mix of third and second tier/regional and domestic talent who mostly have prior TV appearances but almost all as 'opponents'. Some undefeated prospects, some guys who used to be undefeated prospects until fairly recently, a couple of trial horses separating real contenders from pretenders. I've seen nearly all those guys in action before and heard of all but one (Sena Agbeko - I'm assuming some relation to Joe? He even fought on the undercard of Joe's homecoming in Ghana before he challenged Rigondeaux last year...)
At welterweight, we should get a final looking something like Papazov vs. Neequaye or Papazov vs. Amidu, depending on the bracket seeding. At middleweight, damn, that really is anybody's race. Bondas has the worst record but might be the favorite.
Sena is managed and trained by a friend of mine. This tournament is good for boxing. I know Banner worked like crazy to put this together.
So is he a nephew or cousin of King Kong or something, or do they just happen to share a last name but not blood?
The drawing will be done this Friday on FnF's. I'm hoping for Rudd vs Gonzalez in the finals with Rudd winning. At MW, my buddy's fighter, Sena.
(PHILADELPHIA, PA JANUARY 30, 2014)-- Banner Promotions and ESPN's Friday Night Fight's will team up this February to showcase a tournament that will develop boxing's newest stars. The 2014 Boxcino Championships will be a single-elimination, two weight class tournament that will feature eight fighters in both the lightweight and middleweight divisions. The tournament will consist of five shows, to include a preliminary round, semi-finals and finals in each division and will take place throughout the ESPN Friday Night Fights season. The inaugural event will take place on February 21 at the Edgewater Casino in Laughlin, Nevada. Each preliminary round will feature four, 6-round bouts. The winners will move on to the semi finals, which will be 8-round bouts. The finals of both the lightweights and middleweights will be contested at 10 rounds each. A "most valuable boxer" will be voted by the fans and will be given a specially designed ring. "We are looking forward to showcasing this tournament on Friday Night Fights and Noche de Combates," said Brian Kweder, ESPN senior director of programming and acquisitions. "It will give fans the opportunity to see some of the best up-and-coming fighters in the sport and follow them throughout the Friday Night Fights and Noche de Combates season. ESPN did a similar tournament back in 1997, which was won by future four-time world champion Acelino "Popo" Freitas. We hope to find another diamond in the rough like we did that year." "This will be one of the most unique tournaments that boxing has seen in a long time," said Banner Promotions CEO Arthur Pelullo.
