Now I know that sounds a bit ridiculous, but bear with me. I've been reading up on the guy somewhat recently and he sounds very impressive, an obviously incredible puncher(kayoing some heavies and lightheavies with almost relative ease), which leads me to believe that very few WW's would be able to stand toe to toe with him. He also drew with Sam Langford and Joe Gans which is an obviously impressive feat to anyone familiar with the careers of these men. What can you old dudes tell me about The OG Walcott? Any good resources, articles?

Walcott was awesome, he's on any all-time list. But Joe Gans got robbed vs him. There's a film of him being interviewed when he was a janitor at the Garden. Walcott gave away size to EVERY man he faced which makes him incredible. They don't make them like him anymore, no siree bob.

Very impressive. I know that there are some people who rank him very high at welter and p4p. I think he was one of the best p4p of his time, up there with Gans and Langford. I hope that some film emerges sometime, especially the Lavigne fights. Doubt it will happen though.

I've tried to get a handle on all the greats but this is one of the guys that I've yet to really grasp the way I'd like. I'm of no use here. I'm interested to read everyone's input. I have a pretty shallow education on him and his accomplishments.

 You have a unique shtick on this forum, I'll give you that, brother.

Walcott was a ****ing mastodon. If Mastodons were very short black men who could punch your mother-****ing ear off of your ****ing head. Which they were not as far as I am aware. I'm not sure where the whole mastodon simile came from, as it doesn't make traditionally logical "sense", but the fact is, he was tiny and he punched bigger mens cocks out their ****ing nostrils on a regular basis and that gives him an Associates Degree in Badassitude from the Community College of Maxmomer. His win over Choynski is very significant in my book, as it's basically one of my top ten Welterweights beating the **** out of one of my top 15 Light Heavyweights.

I've heard the term "sawn-off Hercules" used to describe him, but I think I like your version a little better. :good

Small bit of trivia. The black Power Ranger's zord was actually a Mastodon.

Barbados Joe was limited by his height (he was around 5 feet tall) but he was a marvel in his time for sure. Even decked a modern-sized heavyweight who wasn't a complete push-over. His power is legendary, but Walcott wasn't unbeatable by any means. His lack of height made it difficult for him to reach clever boxers, but it also made him a difficult target for them. Walcott took most of the landed punches on the top of his seemingly iron skull to no effect.

Hiya Eslubin. Don't forget that Walcott fought most of the fight with only one arm. He tore a tendon in his left arm during the third round, rendering it useless (the next-day reports confirm this). Going the distance with Gans with one arm and making a fight of it goes to Walcott's credit, not detriment.

I get a spanking for this, but I think he's a little overated on the board.

I'm concerned that he could be both out-boxed and out-fought (by West for example), and Lavigne kicked the **** out of him...but Walcott is lauded and Lavigne is grotesquely under-rated.

    Dixon>Walcott, never mind Robinson.
