Well, giving the nod to Duran was both emotional and political...... Barkley prolly edged Duran in some of those close middle rds on points, but when Duran stormed back to drop and cut up Barkley later, well, the tide had turned... In the end, Duran was basically unmarked accept for a few marks, while Barkley looked like he went 12 rds in a war...... I am a Duran jockstrap sniffer, so I scored for Duran by a round or two..... MR.BILL:hat
It was one of them fights that should be used to judge the judges. As the rounds scored themselves, and although the fight was mathematically close, Duran wins every time you look at it.
True, but I thought Duran looked good too against Camacho in '96, only to get jacked-off by politics and dubious scoring.... I also liked how Duran decisioned Castro in 1997 in Panama.... MR.BILLhat
Duran prolly deserved a draw in fight # 1 with Paz back in 1994... Duran dropped Paz good in round 5, but he ran out of steam in rds 9 thru 12...... Paz was busted up and bleeding bad, but landed many pitty-pat shots that racked up points.... MR.BILL
why do you guys say stuff like this? I taped the fight I remember the prefight preview. I remember Leonard coming back after fighting Hearns and the prefight showing clips of Hearns/Barkley with Leonard commenting on that fight. I remember Barkley swinging uselessly when he had Nunn against the ropes. Uneffective aggression and Nunn winning easily in theory. Barkley said Nunn punched like a flower in the post fight interview, and that is when Arum went on a tirade saying Duran (who fought an exhibition fight on the undercard) would destroy the Michael Nunn who fought Barkley tonight. You guys really think I make comments without knowing the fights? I have all the fights on videotape. Even Kalambay vs. Barkley, which was in Italy I think. Went 15 rounds in late 1987.
I have all that **** mentioned on video tucked in my crates galore...... Duran was a slob in Aug. 1989 when he did that exhibition on the undercard of "Nunn-Barkley." I thought Barkley did well enough to get a draw... Barkley did lose to Kalambay on a decision, but then he came back to KO Hearns... Barkley finished his career ugly, but, he has a TKO over Coetzee as a heavyweight.... I'll vote for Barkley's IBHOF induction.....thumbsup:hey SR.BILL:hat
I would vote for him also. Not because he fought Hearns and Duran, but because of his determination to fight the best. He was a hard fighter to predict if he would win or lose.
Barkley lost to Benn at 160 and Toney at 168 cuz he was drained like a squeezed grape going into BOTH of them fights in 1990 and 1993..... No excuse, he may have indeed lacked skills, but he was dead at the weights against "Benn & Toney." MR.BILLhat
It was a terrific fight ... Barkley actually had some of his finest moments of his ring career in this bout ... there were points where he actually boxed beautifully behind a nasty jab ... I solid case could be made for a Barkley decision or at least a draw but at 39 with little shot going in Duran's performance was the story and after rocking Iran in the first and the last round knockdown he squeezed out the event ...
Neither 1 of Kalambay nor Nunn beat Barkley , only difference was that Nunn tried 2 make it interesting 2 watch so it looked like more of a struggle 2 some .
Barkley could not beat Toney. Even early in that fight in round one Toney landed an easy left counter when Barkley was leaning inside and I knew it was going to be a onesided fight. The only thing I thought is Barkley always swings unpredictably, and he did hit Toney a little. Hearns hit him Barkley clean also and probably wore him out more than most, but Toney with his style and youth was not going to lose to Barkley. I do not buy the weight draining stuff. If we buy that then it takes away from nice performances by Benn and Toney. Barkley was a very good hard puncher with a lot of heart and decent strong skills.. His heart meant he would always swing at any point in the fight and it was never over until the 12th round ended. Gutsy guy. The best thing about Barkley was his heart and he was a solid hard puncher with a decent jab. He had great physical strength.
